Additional Information

Delhi’s history traces back to the legendary tale of the Mahabharata, during which it was known as Indraprastha, the home to the Pandavas. Eventually, eight additional cities sprung up alongside Indraprastha: Lal Kot, Siri, Dinpanah, Quila Rai Pithora, Ferozabad, Jahanpanah, Tughlakabad, and Shahjahanabad.

For more than five centuries, Delhi has been the silent observer of a myriad of political upheavals. It was once under the rule of the Mughals, who succeeded the Khiljis and Tughlaqs.

In 1192, the armies of Muhammad of Ghori, the Afghan warrior, overtook the Rajput city, thereby giving rise to the Delhi Sultanate in 1206. However, Timur’s invasion of Delhi in 1398 brought an end to the sultanate. The final sultans of Delhi, the Lodis, were dethroned by Babur, who after winning the battle of Panipat in 1526, set up the Mughal Empire. Despite the initial preference of the Mughal sovereigns for Agra as their capital, Delhi became their definitive seat of power after the construction of the Old Delhi walls by Shah Jahan in 1638.

Excellent driver and guide - During my recent stay in New Delhi, my hotel arranged for a driver to spend a day sightseeing. While the previous day, my experience was less than satisfactory, as the driver did not speak a word of English (although he pretended he did......), which resulted in wasting a lot of time (!), the second was really just about perfect! My driver, Mr., Rajesh Kumar was excellent. His mastery of English was excellent and he was truly interested in what I wanted to do, He was a safe driver, who was able to tell me about the sites we were visiting, etc. He was knowledgeable and accommodating. The only "negative" was that although I had told him that I was not interested in shopping, he did become a bit pushy and I ended up at a store anyway. I understand the system of kickbacks to drivers who bring potential customers to certain stores, but frankly, in the end, I did not regret it as I picked up some very fine items. In summary, I hightloy recommend Mr. Rajesh Kumar.

Round Delhi with private taxi - Lalan was our driver for the week whilst in Delhi and I must say that his experience in the sector and know how helped us, my wife and I with our adopted girl. He is also fully aware of where to go to complete all papers for visas etc. Whilst waiting for our papers he took us around Delhi and managed to do the Old Delhi tour. I recommend Lalan to all other families visiting Delhi.
