Additional Information

On this two-hour walking exploration, you’ll discover how the first Africans arrived in New Orleans in 1719, only a year after the city’s establishment. These people were forcibly relocated from the Senegambia region of West Africa. The 1720s saw about five thousand Africans survive the harrowing journey to French Louisiana, followed by an approximately equal-sized group in the 1780s, brought by the Spanish from Benin and Congo. While in the colonial era, these African slaves cleared forests, cultivated crops, and developed city infrastructure.
Throughout your tour, you’ll witness the powerful influence of African culture in New Orleans, ranging from food and music to religion and architecture.
Your guide will escort you to the renowned Congo Square, now a section of Armstrong Park on the French Quarter’s border in the Faubourg Treme. This place served as a meeting point for countless African slaves and laborers to barter goods, create music, dance, and interact.

Great tour and excellent guide! - This was worth the time. Mika was knowledgeable, patient and accommodating. We rented a wheelchair so my mom didn't have to walk. We all learned so much.

Great Tour! - He had a great time with Meka. She perfectly balanced the seriousness and complexity of history with easy conversation and good rapport. She definitely had a plan and taught us new things, but also engaged with us and did not seem bothered by the ways we derailed her. This was an excellent tour with loads of walking, but also thoughtful touches like photos and bathroom stops.

Great intro to the history of NOLA - We had a great time on this fascinating walking tour. Our guide Mika was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, engaging and friendly. Mika imparted her extensive knowledge in an entertaining and relaxed manner whilst being totally respectful of the subject matter. We enjoyed the conversation and company of the other 2 participants and highly recommend this tour.

A Very Important Walking Tour for people visiting the Quarter - We have participated in other tours in the NOLA area in the past and enjoyed them all. This one though is a very important tour for any visitor to the Quarter to have a better understanding of the African American culture in the area and the influence that the various members of that culture have had on the city since the first enslaved people were brought to NOLA. We learned a lot about the culture and how it has endured through the centuries. This tour has caused me to dig deeper into the culture and history. Thank you!

Knowledgeable and passionate tour guide - Louis Armstrong Park: seeing evidence of offerings under an old tree brought the past and the present together in a way that I would have never seen has I not seen had I not gone on this tour.

Skip All The Nonsense - So, I had the same tour guide, for this tour, as I did when I took The Garden District Tour. Right away, the tour guide tried to extort more money out of me. He said I was rude, because he wasn’t happy with the tip I gave him for the previous tour. And, he threatened to not run the tour at all. You see, no one else had bought a ticket for this group tour either. And, so the guide was going to cancel it without refund, because he was trying to use blackmail to get a bigger tip. News flack! While it is a good idea to tip when you travel, tips are still suppose to be optional. And, you should never feel pressured to tip more than you are comfortable with (like this tour guide was trying to pressure me to do). Skip the problems from an incompetent guide and just go read the plaques in Congo Square yourself. It will be more accurate information.
