Highlights
  • Usuzan West Craters Observatory - We will drive from adex base, Noboribetsu to the Usuzan volcano trailhead (approx. 60 minutes). From there we will hike up through the mountain forests up to the West Crater Observatory (approx. 90 minutes). At the summit we will have a break whilst enjoying the beautiful views (approx. 30 minutes). We will then hike back down to the carpark (approx. 60 minutes). From there we will drive back to adex base to finish the tour (approx. 60 minutes).

Additional Information

Usuzan is one of the most active volcanoes in Japan, with its last eruption occurring in 2000. The eruption dramatically altered the landscape, and the remnants are still visible today. During this hike, you’ll witness Usuzan’s volcanic activity through numerous fumaroles emitting from the craters.

Beginning in woodland, you’ll climb through various forest types to reach the 500-meter-high summit, where stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, Lake Toya, and Mt. Yotei await. Your guide will share insights about the nature you encounter and the history of Usuzan, including its impact on the surrounding area. This fulfilling hike offers a fantastic introduction to Hokkaido’s finest natural scenery!
