  • Parroquia de Santo Tomás Xochilmilco - We will meet in front of the church of Xochimilco. Here we will stop for a couple of minutes to introduce ourselves and talk a little about the ancient and contemporary history of the Xochimilco neighborhood.

  • Doctor Gilberto Bolaños Cacho - We will begin by exploring the work of the artisan weavers in the traditional neighborhood of Xochimilco, one of the most beautiful and representative areas of the city, immersing ourselves in the daily work of the loom workshop.

  • C. José López Alavez 1222 - We will then walk through the streets of this neighborhood to reach a small artisan chocolate producer’s house, where we will learn about the elaboration of this exquisite product and taste some varieties, enjoying its texture and captivating aroma.

  • Santo Tomas 118 - We will also visit one of the oldest workshops that still work with tinplate and other metal crafts. In the workshop we will learn about the process to create sculptures and crafts that have been exhibited all over the world.

  • Barrio de Xochimilco - We will walk through the neighborhood to observe its beautiful architecture, colorful houses and murals. In addition to contemplate the beautiful construction of the old aqueduct, which dates from the eighteenth century.

  • Oaxaca - We leave Xochimilco behind to enter the center of the city since our next destination is one of the most emblematic markets of the city. So while walking we can, on the one hand, contrast the style, beauty and atmosphere of the historic center and the neighborhood of Xochimilco and, on the other hand, talk about the history, traditions, and bohemian life of this city.

  • Flores Magón 209 - Inside the Benito Juárez market, we will explore its main areas. Walking inside the market will be the perfect excuse for you to try the traditional “nieves”, the famous “chapulines” or have a “tejate”, our traditional pre-Hispanic cocoa-based drink.

Wonderful experience - I’ll recommend this tour for who want to know about the culture and people in Oaxaca or who’re interested at handmade work. We’re the only guest of the day, so we got well along with Mario as friend. We met in time and make a short introduction of each other. We have pass 6 points at the day. Unfortunately we didn’t visit the local market with Mario because of the time( I guess because we’re so enjoy the time with Mario so we spent most of the time to talk and know each other and Mexico culture and Oaxaca culture). But it’s totally fine because we already know something more than the market. Mario is passion and polite, he make us feel like we’re welcome to the city and to the culture. He knows everyone from the community and have good relationships with them. There’s not necessary to buy anything from different stops, but because of the affordable price and high quality we bought something.

An absolute must - Amazing walking tour in Oaxaca - My family went on this tour and we cannot recommend it highly enough. It was amazing - Mario is very knowledgeable and a wonderful tour guide. His passion for the area and the trades people is evident in how he talks about their importance to the community. If you're looking for an authentic look behind the touristy sites, this tour will offer something that is not easily available. Mario has been doing these tours for sometime now. He quipped his english was "good enough for the tour." Really, he was just being modest as his english is quite good. He was thoughtful and answered questions thoroughly. Mario and/or the trades people did not pressure us to buy anything, but the quality was so high that we ended up buying chocolate and a blanket anyways along with some other foods in the market. I would recommend bringing extra cash for this tour in case you do want to buy anything. The group only had 6 people which was great, as it would be harder with a larger group.
