Oaxaca Small Group Chocolate Experience: A Journey from Cacao to Creation

Originally, I am from the Zoque ethnic community in the Isthmus Region, which is a part of the Oaxaca state. I hail from a family whose traditions revolve around chocolate. I am eager to share my experiences and the knowledge I have garnered over time about cocoa. You will have an opportunity to savor how cocoa’s taste changes based on the preparation.

Outstandingly good vibes. - This class was fantastic for our family (including 2 thirteen year olds)! Azomalli was a wonderful, engaging teacher. Her passion and knowledge for chocolate and Oaxaca was infectious. Incredibly peaceful vibes throughout the whole experience and left feeling like we had a new friend. Would recommend to anyone, it was quite an experience.

Wonderful - highly recommend for chocolate lovers who also love learning! - I would recommend this experience to anyone. It was fantastic, and our whole family enjoyed it. We learned so much about chocolate and how different cacao varieties are prepared, and we got to try our hands at making chocolate. The founder is kind and taught us so much. Not to mention... it was so delicious!

Chocolate Fun - Our host, Ruth, was so knowledgeable about the history and cultural significance of cacao in the region. I brought my 5 year old daughter along. Our host was so kind and patient with her. We had so much fun tasting cacao and making chocolate! The next morning she begged me to take her back to the “chocolate class.” A core memory for sure.

Unique and fun experience - Highly recommend! It was very informative and fun. Learned a lot about cacao as well as cultures around cacao in Oaxaca. We tried different types of cacaos cultivated in different regions and also tried chocolate drinks. Our favorite was chocolate with chili!

A must do experience in Oaxaca City - We had a wonderful experience during our chocolate tasting. We were engaged during the entire experience and learned about the history of cacaos, tried the fruits during different phases of the process and enjoyed chocolate in different forms including hot chocolate. We even got a special treat at the end which was a toast with strawberries and a "Oaxacan" affogato. Our instructor was conversational and was available to answer questions.

For chocolate lovers visiting Oaxaca - My wife and I did a 3 hour visit learning about the history of chocolate in Mexico and how chocolate is grown, harvested and processed into the chocolate drinks and products that I in particular love! We learned about the different types of beans, shelling them, roasting them, grinding them, adding sugar and then enjoying a chocolate drink, leaving with the bag of chocolate we had processed. Our host was very knowledgeable and amicable during the 3 hours. Highly recommended for chocolate lovers! As a note, the location is at the back of the address, and not obvious as the front has no signage (apparently they can't put any up), so be persistent and walk through the front area until the store and chocolate area open up.
