Additional Information

The experience is super relaxed, we start by sitting down and tasting a little bit of Portugal, while I give a brief explanation of what we’re going to cook. Cooking while hungry is a bad policy.
When we’re ready, we put on our aprons and start the teamwork, under my guidance. Some of the ingredients are from my backyard, and I’ll take you to see what they are…

As we prepare the food, I’ll tell some stories about the origins of the ingredients to be used.

In the end, we set the table and sat down to savor all the dishes we’ve prepared.

IMPORTANT: If you have any food allergies or follow a specific diet (vegetarian, paleo, vegan, etc …) let me know as soon as possible so we can prepare in advance all the ingredients needed.

Location
Igreja de São Bento de Valejas
The meeting place is the church square in my village, and I'll meet you there.

BOOK THIS NOW!!!! - Katija was the most welcoming host. Her home is in a beautiful village and has lots of history. She shared many stories about herself and her country, it was all so interesting and gave you an insiders view to Portugal. She has a wonderful garden and we picked tea leaves right off of the tree! Not only did we drink the tea there, she was kind enough to pack some up for us to take home. The cooking class started with bread, olives and a delicious homemade seasoned cheese. We were also offered Portugals famous green wine! We got to cook a delicious meal of traditional tomato rice, cod and salad and for desert a dish known as “sawdust”. Everything was so delicious and the class was so much fun! I would go back a million times! Thank you Katija for opening your home!!!

Authentic cooking activity and wonderful human experience - My Mom and I visited Portugal for a week for the first time last March. We have had the pleasure of meeting Katija whilst she was hosting us for the "Portugese flavors in a typical village home" activity. We left feeling genuinely happy, refreshed and hopeful. Katija was funny, bubbly and warm. It was a wonderful experience hearing a part of her life journey and sharing ours. It was the type of interactions when you think "worldwide, people are people, and people are beautiful". When visiting a country, it is so easy hearing unflattering comments about the locals. Unconsciously, some of us may pass on those comments without really understand the culture, the history or even attempting to do so. If you are from those who have a genuine desire to learn more about a culture, I'd definitely recommend activities with the locals. If you are in Portugal, do reach out to Katija! We gain so much more than great food and wine! The food brought back childhood memories and made us feel home (we are from the Caribbean). Although we do enjoy fancy restaurants, nothing beats home cooking, a cosy atmosphere and positive vibes! We ended up forgetting our plans for the rest of the day :) As for food, on the menu was different wine, baba de camelo, bacalhau à Brás, portugese sweet bread, and other aperitives. Regretting not taking some back with us haha! Katija left a great impression and we would want to meet her once again (hopefully with more food!). In conclusion, instead of going only to restaurants or Time Out Market, visit Katija - especially as there are not many locals providing this activity!

Great experience! - I can’t say enough about the grace, compassion and patience that my husband and I experienced. We threw so many firsts at Katija and she was able to accept and adapt with apparent ease. We requested low carb modifications. A+ on follow through. When we arrived, my husband was not feeling well. He was offered every comfort. To make a long story short, I had a lovely time preparing the food and then it was packaged to go for us to consume later. Her outdoor kitchen is perfect and the food was delicious. I would not hesitate to return!!

Great choice to learn from a local! - Katija was a fantastic host, warm and friendly. Due to the forecast, she invited us into her home for the experience instead of the typical outdoor garden option. Her home was clean and she had prepped some of the ingredients, allowing us to do some as well. We began with fresh local couvert and port wine while she explained what we would be cooking and the significance of the recipe. She taught us about the origins of Portuguese cuisine and her own experience growing up in a Portuguese colony. We learned so much about the history and culture through her eyes. She also made sure we had all helpful information and top suggestions for the rest of our trip throughout the country - and gave us some tips that saved us $ on travel later on! A couple days after the class, she emailed us a custom e-book of the recipes we had cooked and many others which she offers during her class! Highly recommend this experience and would go back again!
