Additional Information

Tourists often visit the native villages in Malaysia, known as Orang Asli Villages, in hopes of experiencing the life of the Aboriginal people and gaining insights into their culture. Orang Asli communities are scattered across various regions of Malaysia, and their lifestyle is influenced by their location. Coastal communities such as the Orang Laut, Orang Seletar and Mah Meri are primarily fisherfolk. Meanwhile, the Temuan, Jakun and Semai have adopted farming, with quite a few managing plantations of rubber, oil palm and cacao.

Notably, approximately 40% of the Orang Asli people continue to live in forests. They practice hill rice farming, hunting, gathering, and trade in forest commodities including petai, durian, rattan and resins. These forestry tribes include the Semai, Temiar, Che Wong, Jah Hut, Semelai and Semoq Beri. A handful still lead a nomadic way of life deep in the rainforests like the Negrito groups such as the Jahai and Lanoh.

Those wishing to visit should note that during the rainy season, paths may be excessively muddy and thus travel advisories are issued.
