Highlights
  • Kawiti Caves - Our destination is the Kawiti Glowworm Caves where a local Maori guide will lead you through underground caverns to see the glow worms and tell you how the caves came to be found.

Your 30 minute guided tour will follow a wooden boardwalk (with handrails) through a 200 metre limestone cave system. Once inside, you will see thousands of glow worms spread across the ceiling surrounded by breath taking stalactites and stalagmites.

  • Kawakawa Public Toilets by Hundertwasser - Then, a short drive to Kawakawa, location of the world famous “Hundertwasser Toilets” one of the few public toilets seen as an international work of art, designed by the expatriate Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, features the use of recycled materials from the local community.
  • Waitangi Golf Club - The lookout at the Golf Club offer spectacular photo opportunities looking out over Waitangi Bay.
  • Opua Forest Lookout Track - Here you will see Kauri trees that are over one thousand years old.

Kawiti glow work cave tour and Opua forest walk - Glow worms can only be seen in the dark, and this cave is particularly suited to it. Special lights were provided to the walkers and the guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. There were handrails for the narrow walk and we were cautioned to watch our heads (it is a natural cave, folks). The forest walk was also informative (we learned about the indigenous trees) due to our driver/walk guide. This walk had some ups and down terrain in a narrow forest footpath, but it was not too hard for me. (I am in 70s and not great shape.) There was also an unexpected stop to admire the work of a really creative architect in a nearby town.

Unique experience to see the Milky Way as presented by glow worms - Bill was a wonderful tour guide and even spotted "Rob" the eel outside the Kawiti Glow Worm Cave. We enjoyed the forest walk despite being a bit tired. He took for care of us all.

Glowing review- pun intended - Bay of Islands is lovely. We had great weather and Bill was a wonderful guide to the Caves, the forest with the 1000 year old Kapua trees and the town of Kawakawa to see Hundertstasse recycled public bathrooms and small town. Vans are small and able to get into areas the cruise ship tour busses cannot. They are prompt and make sure you return to your ship before they weigh anchor.

A hidden treasure - I place worthwhile visiting. We were lucky and had a guide just for ourselves. He was a young local boy from the region and he knew everything about the cave. It is really impressive to see these thousands of green shining points, especially at the ceiling of the cave they look like the milky way in a clear dark night.

Cave is a must see - The glow worm cave was amazing. Our Māori presenter provided wonderful information as we toured this unusual cave. Highly recommend! The walk through the rainforest was quiet and serene. We would have enjoyed more information throughout the drive learning as much as we could about beautiful New Zealand.
