Highlights
  • Erice - The amazingly sited Castello di Venere in Erice. Towering over the west of Sicily at 751m above sea level and often covered in its own personal cloud, Erice is a wonderfully preserved Mediaeval town offering the most breathtaking views and a palpable sense of history.
  • Marsala - Marsala is the most populated town in its province and the fifth in Sicily. The town is famous for the docking of Giuseppe Garibaldi on 11 May 1860 (the Expedition of the Thousand) and for its Marsala wine. A feature of the area is the Stagnone Lagoon Natural Reserve – a marine area with salt ponds.
  • SEI - Saline Ettore E Infersa - The salt marshes of Marsala in Sicily are a unique spectacle. Imagine finding yourself in front of placid stretches of water framed by slight white salt dunes where, suddenly, you can see traditional mills. Keep imagining that you are witnessing this show during the sunset time. The orange-red color of the setting sun turns purple and the landscape becomes extraordinarily magical. Well this is one of the experiences you can have by going to the Marsala Salt Pans during an itinerary in Sicily.

Towns of Italy - Big shout out to Towns of Italy here in Palermo. We have completed two tours with them and their guides are superb and loaded with knowledge. Yesterday’s Guide & Driver were Renate and Francesco, who both, from the off, greeted us very warmly and treated us as though we were friends who had know each other for many years - we were a small group of four, the other couple were American who have relocated to Edinburgh 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️- they love it and wouldn’t make any changes. Anyway, getting back on track - the first stop of the tour was to the mountain town/village of Erice - absolutely beautiful, quiet and serene. In its day it boasted approx 100 churches but now there are only around 5/6 in regular use, some only available for Weddings, Christenings and other holy celebrations. We visited the oldest bakery and were greeted by Grammarica Maria herself. She is around 80 years old and she started the bakery. We were served 2 x speciality pasties and coffee - delicious. Our next stop was the Salt Pans of Marsala - quite beautiful. The windmills are no longer working due to technology advances but they still looked very attractive. Of course, we couldn’t visit Marsala without having wine tasting and a Sicilian Lunch at the famous winery of the Florio family. A prominent entrepreneurial Italian family who started making and selling and exporting the world famous Marsala wine in the nineteenth century. Almost everything the winery produces is home grown and organic including the pasta served. The exception to this was the sheep’s cheese. The sheep however are from a neighbouring farm and are also organically raised! The winery guide Petro was very informative and loved answering our many questions. The wine tasting was part of our lunch experience with Petro explaining the dishes, the order in which to eat them and the wine being served with each of the courses. Fabulous experience and delicious food. Following lunch which finished around 3:00ish, we travelled back to Palermo to conclude our tour!

Fabulous country escape from Palermo - Wonderful escape to the lovely Erice with plenty of time to take in the views. Renato was an excellent guide showing us around the village and the main attractions. Donna Franca winery tour and lunch were exceptional. Very knowledgeable gentleman who explained all about the wines and the history of the winery. Stop at the Marsala salt pans was also very interesting. Thanks Renato and Giovanni for a special day. Would definitely recommend this tour.

Perfect venture westward from Palermo - This tour is a great way to venture westward from Palermo comfortably. Erice is a city you must see when visiting Sicily. It was easy to find the meeting point. Our driver Renato was a good-humored and radiant guy. The whole tour was great thanks to him. We didn't rush anywhere; we traveled comfortably. We had time to look around and take photos. Our first stop was Erice. We arrived early, so we managed to walk around empty streets. That little pastry shop was a brilliant resting spot. Then we headed to Marsala to see the salt marshes and windmills. After that, we went for lunch and visited a winery. It was a very nice and cozy place. They welcomed us with delicious wines and lunch. I can only recommend this experience.

Great tour - This was a great tour. Renalto, our driver/guide was the best! We were so lucky to be the only ones to book the day so we had a private tour! Renalto pointed out beautiful picturesque sites on the way to Erice. Once we arrived he brought us to a bakery with amazing cookies and pastry. From here he showed us what a beautiful little town Erice is, explained sites along the way and guided us through the medieval town. Next we were off to the Marsala salt mines for a quick look. Next we arrived at an amazing winery. It was not only a beautiful spot but we had a great tour from Peter, who was so enthusiastic about how they make wine. He gave a great tour. We ended with the best lunch and wine tasting. It was a perfect day!

Erice to wine - Renato was a fantastic guide. He explained about the towns on the way to Erice and everything around. Erice is stunning and it was great to be there in the morning when it was quiet. The salt plains are impressive. The vineyard with wine tasting and food is also well worth the trip, great day. Our favourite trip of the holiday. 😁
