Highlights
  • Teatro dell’Opera dei Pupi - This unique form of puppet theatre, originating in southern Italy, particularly Sicily, in the early 1800s, is recognized as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
  • Teatro Massimo - The largest opera house in Italy and the third largest in Europe, built in 1875, with a history rich in legends.
  • Capo Street Market - Palermo’s premier street food market.
  • Dainotti’s Cibo di Strada - The top street food shop (friggitoria) in Palermo’s historic center.
  • Via Beati Paoli - Named after a secretive sect believed to have existed in medieval Sicily, as depicted in Luigi Natoli’s historic novel I Beati Paoli. While the novel is fictional, there is some historical evidence of the sect’s existence.
  • Cattedrale di Palermo - The Cathedral of Palermo is the most significant monument of the “Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale” site, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015.

The Cathedral of Palermo was established by Gualtiero Offamilio, the town’s archbishop from 1169 to 1190. Originally a mosque during Islamic rule, it was converted into a cathedral by Roberto the Guiscardo after Palermo’s conquest. Its unique features include inlays and architectural and sculptural elements that reflect the influence of Romanesque art and early Gothic decorative styles in Sicily.

  • Cassaro Alto - The oldest street in Palermo, known as Via Toledo since the 16th century. After Italy’s unification, it was renamed Via Vittorio Emanuele II, but the old name remains in use.
  • Quattro Canti - Also known as Vigliena Square, this octagonal square is located at the intersection of Palermo’s two main streets: Via Maqueda and Cassaro (Corso Vittorio Emanuele). Historical sources refer to it as the “Octagon” or “Sun’s Theatre” because one of its façades is always illuminated by the sun during the day. Constructed between 1609 and 1620, the square serves as a central point connecting the four main districts of the time: Kalsa, La Loggia, Capo, and Albergheria. The four façades of the buildings have different levels: the lowest features fountains symbolizing Palermo’s four main rivers (Oreto, Kemonia, Pannaria, Papireto); the next level displays allegories of the four seasons (Eolo, Venus, Cerere, Bacchus); the middle level is adorned with statues of Carlo V, Filippo II, Filippo III, and Filippo IV; and the top level features illustrations of Palermo’s four saints before the arrival of Saint Rosalia in 1624: Agata, Ninfa, Oliva, and Cristina.

Fun and educational! - Fabrizio is a great guide. Excellent info on Palermo, and a fun walk through the market. I forgot to tell him about a need for a gluten free option, and he still attempted to find some local options for us. Great tour!

Relaxing, fruitful and enjoyable - Absolutely worth time and money! The guide was engaged and balanced well the talk with the walk duration. Told interesting stories with some fun facts while strolling through historical Palermo center - was very attentive. The street food tasting was just enough and with various types. Our whole family of 4 with 8/11 yrs old kids enjoyed it 😀

In my opinion the route to the Point of Sale should have lasted longer since the itinerary included an hour of rest - Nice experience. Our very capable and exhaustive Guide. Tour focused mostly on the history of Palermo and the historic center of the city
