Highlights
  • Musee de l’Armee des Invalides - Commissioned by King Louis XIV and designed in the 17th century by Jules Hardouin Mansart (the same architect who designed the incredible Hall of Mirrors in Versailles) the Invalides was originally built as a hospital and home for wounded and retired soldiers returning from the king’s wars. The king knew that he owed his glories to his troops, so he ordered a most magnificent building for them. The Invalides is also home to the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte and the fascinating museum of the army, tracing the history of the French armies and their allies from the jousts of kings, through invasion and resistance to the Normandy landings of WWII. Nowadays you will still find veterans living there, and the gold-domed Cathedral of St. Louis is the seat of the Bishop of the Armies.

Your expert guide will take you on a historical journey. Hear of the exploits of General Bonaparte and learn how he became Emperor Napoleon, and hear how two British pilots were hidden in this very structure during La Resistance under German occupation in the 1940s.

  • Cathedrale Saint-Louis des Invalides - Then visit the breathtaking tomb of the most famous general in European history. After crowning himself Emperor in 1804, Napoleon went on to conquer huge swathes of Europe, until his final defeat at Waterloo. Exiled until his death in 1821, his body was returned to France and placed here in the enormous sarcophagus built specially for him. His son is also buried next to him, his body brought to Paris by Hitler in 1940.

Join your guide on this compelling visit to the Invalides, and journey through war, defeat, resistance, and glory.

Napoleon's Triumphs - Our guide Michael was extremely well versed in history. We focused on Napoleon and the battles he won leading to his coronation as Emperor. We then visited both the military church and the adjoining church with Napoleon's tomb. The churches were stunning, especially the dome, statuary and incredible marble edifices. Michael was quite charming and interesting.

Impossible to fully describe - It is hard to describe the beauty of this place. I spent hours in here, mesmerized. You have to dress appropriately and be respectfully quiet. My advice is to let noisy tour groups pass by so you can enjoy the serenity of the place.

Les Invalides is a tour of French history. - Les Invalides is a journey into the past. The collection of military artifacts is amazing. Of course, the main attraction is Napoleon's tomb. And it is indeed impressive.

Les Invalides - do a tour - Les Invalides like most places in Paris is huge and even with an audio guide I don’t think you would get much out of the visit like we did when we toured with our guide. He bought the history to life, he was passionate about his subject and this came through when telling us bits and bobs. I would highly recommend this small group tour to anyone - you won’t be sorry.

A super interesting day at Musse de l’Armee - Julienne was an excellent guide for our tour very knowledgeable, very professional. The pace of the tour was comfortable and considerate for all parties. Highlights of the tour were the history behind the King’s armor and the scale models of cannons, gun carriages, and caissons. Another highlight was the hidden symbolism of the paintings and various statuary. I’d do it again.

Impressive - We saw a beautiful light show here in the evening. Very bombastic building. During the day it would have been too boring for me. It's strange how Napoleon is celebrated and revered here.

Army displays highlighted by Napoleon's Tomb. - Napoleon's Tomb!!! A great tour. Worth the time and money. Tour Guide was very knowledgeable. My only suggestion: this was a small group only 4 people. We met at a stupid location. At a very busy sidewalk cafe: Finding 4 other people was very difficult - particularly since we could have met by the fence of the exhibit. A Much easier place to identify a tour group.

A little disappointing - Wonderful museum, however WWI and WWII exhabitions were closed, without us being informed when we purchased tickets, watch out for this! The rest on show was very good.

The French have a lot to teach us Americans - Guide seemed a little tired. Overall, the museum was well done. The chapel where Napoleon is in turned, was phenomenal. It was very moving to see how respected and in mortal this little guy was treated, especially in view of the fact that so much French blood was spilled Under his guidance. The French are to be honored with this exhibit.
