Highlights
  • Musee de l’Orangerie - Situated in the beautifully manicured Tuileries Gardens, the Orangerie transformed into a museum in the early 20th century when Paris’s over-crowded museums needed new galleries. The Orangerie most famously houses the series of various waterlilies Monet granted to France thanks to his friendship with George Clemenceau, which earned their own private gallery space. The expansive collection of 19th century and early 20th century paintings features works by other famous Impressionists and those who came after. View Cezanne’s studies of fruits and flowers, seductive portraits by Matisse, and various phases of Picasso’s career through several nudes. Other artists including Modigliani, Renoir, and Utrillo, all make the Orangerie a must-visit for anyone who appreciates French art and the Impressionist movement.

Recommended guided tour - Lilli was a great guide. Through the Olympics there was a lot to consider and she was able to anticipate all questions and already provided a lot of information material. During the tour, she had a lot of great background information that we as medium-sized “art experts” did not yet have. She talks very vividly and it is just fun to take part in the tour. Highly recommended.

Belen was terrific as a tour guide - This was the first day that the Olympic Red Zones for security were enforced, everything was chaos, the buses & Metro near our hotel on St Louis Isle did not run, & no taxis could get anywhere near…. We had to walk many many kilometres because of security barriers & no map was available showing barriers to know how to get to the Orangerie. This made us very very late for our 2 hour 10.00am tour. Belen was incredibly understanding & patient. We kept in touch with her & she knew of the first day chaos, so she very kindly waited 1 & 1 /2 hours till we finally arrived thru checkpoints etc. Her love of Monet’s art was evident & the depth of her knowledge & ability to impart it were just fantastic. She had a tour to guide somewhere else after, but even so, generously gave us 40 minutes instead of the 30 minutes that we were actually entitled to. We learnt so much, & as Benel said, felt very very fortunate to be in L’Orangerie on a day when very few others could get there, so were able to truly appreciate the Water Lilies just as Monet intended - in peace & tranquility with an opportunity to reflect in his amazing interpretations of light & colour.

Bel of the Ball - the best museum tour - Let us start by saying, Bel was amazing. We couldn’t imagine a better guide & person to walk us through the Musée de l’Orangerie. As we were traveling during the Olympic shutdowns, it was challenging finding our way around the city. Bel was incredibly proactive in making sure we had everything we needed to get to the museum & sent reminders up until we arrived of how to get around. Bel handled every challenge with grace, whether it be the Paris Police guards who were checking everyone’s QR codes in order to get close to the museum, or another tour group trying to find their guide (also from Babylon Tours). In the museum, you could see her passion for art & her knowledge of the history, theory, & museum itself. Throughout the tour, we saw strangers around the museum trying listen in, clearly drawn to what she was saying as much as we were. Even Picasso would have walked away learning something new from her. It was an absolute pleasure getting to explore the museum with Bel - we can’t recommend her enough, especially for a museum that isn’t as well known as the Louvre. We hope we can see her again in another museum when we return! Make sure to book her for the Musée d’Orsay or the Musée de l’Orangerie so you can really see her shine & learn from her.
