Yaxha is unique because it is situated between Lake Yaxha and Lake Sacnab. The site dates back to the Pre-Classic period (3000 BC to 300 AD) and was a significant lake port during the Classic period (300 AD to 900 AD).

  • Yaxha North Acropolis - We’ll visit the Minor Astronomical Observatory, built by the ancient Mayans to mark equinoxes and solstices. It includes an observation building and three reference buildings used to track the sunrise and seasonal changes, crucial for agriculture.

We’ll walk along the Causeway of the Quarry, a Mayan road built next to a quarry that supplied much of the city’s building materials.

We’ll also visit the North Acropolis, the city’s center, featuring a triadic plaza with three temples forming a triangle. The temples represent twin brothers from Mayan mythology and the god of corn, their father.

  • Grupo Malher - A thousand years after Yaxha was abandoned, German explorer Teobert Malher rediscovered the city in 1904. The Malher Group was the first complex he found.

This group features a building with hybrid Mayan-Teotihuacan architecture, showcasing the cultural exchange between the Mayans and Central Mexico. We’ll walk along the causeway of the reservoirs, a 100-foot-wide road used to collect rainwater and as a sacred path for processions.

We’ll also have the chance to see spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) and/or howler monkeys (Alouatta pigra).

  • Yaxhá-Nakum-Naranjo National Park - Yaxhá, along with Nakum and Naranjo, was declared a national park in 2006, following its use as a setting for the reality show “Survivor.”

We’ll visit the Major Astronomical Observatory, a pyramid with a flat top offering views over the forest, lake, and other structures. In front of the observatory is a palace, likely the residence of the city’s main astronomer.

We’ll pass by the causeway of the lake, the main access to the city, which functioned as a lake port.

We’ll explore the residential palace of Yaxha royalty, consisting of five courtyards, one of which is restored. Pre-Hispanic graffiti was found inside the palaces.

  • Cultural Triangle Yaxha-Nakum-Naranjo National Park - Yaxha has a ball game court for the game Pok Ta Poc, popular in ancient Mesoamerica. We’ll explore this building and the surrounding structures used for observing sporting events.

We’ll walk through the Square of the Birds, likely the city’s market square, and the causeway of the residential area, where a middle-class housing complex was found.

As a relatively new national park, Yaxhá offers a unique experience, allowing visitors to feel immersed in a Mayan city. Many visitors consider Yaxhá their favorite after visiting several Mayan sites.

  • Yaxha National Park - We’ll walk on rectangular platforms that once supported wooden structures, now only stone bases remain.

Around 900 AD, the city was abandoned for unknown reasons, and the jungle gradually buried it.

We’ll explore the complex of twin pyramids, a style unique to Tikal but also found in Yaxha due to their diplomatic relationship.

  • Yaxha National Park - The Square of the Columns was used for religious and government meetings. Mayan cities had a theocratic government system, with the religious institution overseeing all city activities, including astronomy.

Public squares like this were ideal for political propaganda monuments, such as stelae with sculptures. One stele here depicts a Teotihuacan general who aimed to conquer the Mayans in 378 AD.

In front of this square is the East Acropolis, home to Yaxha’s tallest structure, the temple of the Red Hands. We’ll climb it for a panoramic view of the Mayan world.

  • Yaxha National Park - The tour ends with a drop-off at your pickup location or another pre-arranged location. Any price difference will be settled on-site.

Great tour - My wife and I had a great time touring Yaxha (and Tikal) with Marlon. He's friendly, professional, incredibly knowledgeable, and also gave us some time to explore on our own. I've done a lot of tours, and you couldn't ask for a better tour guide than Marlon.

Incredible views, enhanced by Marlon's knowledge and charisma - This tour deserves 5+ stars. On the logistics: The tour is well organized from beginning to end--picked up on time, comfortable transportation, sufficient stops, and since we had a night plane to catch Marlon kindly offered to show us Flores and the surrounding areas which just added to the experience. The best part was Yaxha itself, the archaeologica site (not the lake). It is in the middle of the forest so you get to experience the culture, with birds, monkeys, and even a tarantula... It is gorgeous. The equally fantastic part and what brings it all together for us: Marlon's knowledge, charisma, and kindness. This man knows his staff, he is a Professional guide with a capital P. Makes the experience remarkable, memorable. We were lucky to have him as our tour guide and hope to have a chance to visit Guatemala again and explore other regions, in which case we will certainly call him up. Highly recommended.

Top notch guide and company - My private tour to Yaxha with Marlon was by far one of my favorite parts of my trip to Guatemala. He is highly knowledgeable about a range of topics from botany and wildlife to history and politics in both Spanish and English. He is very responsive and professional and it was easy to schedule my tour. He was a pleasure to spend the day with. The lunch was excellent and we had plenty of time to explore Yaxha, which is a magical place especially at sunset. He even took photos and sent them to me to remember my tour. Don’t hesitate to book with Marlon and Gem Tours - you won’t be disappointed!

Great experience, thanks Billy! - Billy was an extremely friendly and knowledgeable guide, answering all our questions about the history of Tikal, Mayan culture and the wildlife within the park in extreme detail, while also telling us fascinating personal stories and experiences. The day was everything that we had hoped for and much more, being able to learn so much about Guatemalan history, seeing all the animals we wanted to (monkeys, parrots, crocodiles, while still avoiding snakes!), and topping it off with a beautiful sunset. Thank you so much Billy, we could not recommend this highly enough!

Great experience - Great experience, the team took care of everything and we enjoyed all of it. There was enough time to enjoy the Tikal area and reach the top of one of the temples to admire the sunset. Highly recommended experience!

Fantastic Flores Area Adventures with gemtrips.com - Marlon was an excellent guide for two days. He is very professional and knowledgeable. He is also patient and kind. We had a wonderful trip to Blue Crater, Ceiba, and Tikal. Thrn we asked to go on the zip line outside of Tikal on the spur of the moment and he was happy to accommodate us. Thanks for great memories, Marlon!

Tikal tour was the highlight of our family's trip to Guatemala/Belize - The guided tour of Tikal was the highlight of our amazing 10-day vacation in Guatemala and Belize. Tikal is huge and breath-takingly beautiful, but it would be impossible to appreciate the historical and cultural significance of the site without a guide. Our guide (Marlon) is exactly what a guide should be - very knowledgeable, articulate (speaks perfect English), efficient, friendly and patient. I am so glad that my family and I took this tour with Marlon. Amazing!

Amazing site, excellent guide - I visited Tikal with a couple of friends on late November 2019. We wanted to enhance the experience with a good guide so we looked online at many options and ended up selecting Gem tours based on TripAdvisor reviews and comments. It was a very good decision. Marlon was our guide and he shared with us his knowledge of the Mayan culture and history, the nature of the region of Tikal and also some of the history of Guatemala. His English is excellent and he was tailoring the stops on our day tour along the way based on our interests. We also were guided by Marlon the next day for a day tour to Yahxa. I highly recommend choosing GemTours. All the communication with Iris prior to the visit went very well and
