Highlights
  • Phnom Penh - This morning, visit the Royal Palace and delve into a brighter chapter of Cambodian history with a tour of the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. Discover Wat Phnom, a serene temple perched on a hill that gave the city its name. Legend has it that in the 14th century, a woman named Penh found sacred Buddhist relics in a nearby river and placed them on this small hill.

Lunch not included

In the afternoon, explore the infamous Killing Fields “Choeung Ek,” located 15km southwest of Phnom Penh. This site witnessed the brutal executions of over 17,000 people, many of whom endured interrogations, torture, and deprivation at Toul Sleng Prison during Pol Pot’s regime (1975–1979). Continue your visit to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21 prison), a former high school turned into a prison by Pol Pot’s security forces, which became the largest center for detention and torture during the Khmer Rouge era. Afterwards, enjoy shopping at a local market at your leisure.

  • Royal Palace - The Royal Palace features some stunning buildings, including the Throne Hall, located to the left of the main entrance. It boasts a 59-meter tower with a beautifully tiered roof adorned with golden tiles. This building is used for high official celebrations, coronations, and meetings with foreign dignitaries and government officials. The Royal Treasury and the Napoleon III villa are situated south of the Royal Throne Hall.
  • Silver Pagoda - Wat Preah Keo Morakot (Silver Pagoda) is situated in the southern part of the Royal Palace complex. Formerly known as Wat Uborsoth Rotannaram, it is where the King worshiped, prayed, and observed Buddhist Silas Day.
  • Wat Phnom - Perched atop a tree-covered knoll 27 meters high, Wat Phnom is the only hill in the city. According to legend, the first pagoda on this site was built in 1373 to house four Buddha statues deposited by the Mekong River and discovered by a woman named Penh.
  • Choeung Ek Genocidal Center - Between 1975 and 1978, about 17,000 men, women, children, and infants (including nine Westerners) detained and tortured at S-21 prison (now Tuol Sleng Museum) were transported to this extermination site to be killed, avoiding the use of precious bullets. The remains of 8,985 people, many of whom were bound and blindfolded, were exhumed in 1980 from mass graves in what was once an orchard; 43 of the 129 communal graves here remain untouched. Fragments of human bone and bits of cloth are scattered around the disinterred pits. Over 8,000 skulls, arranged by sex, are visible behind the clear glass panels of the Memorial Stupa, erected in 1988. The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek are located 15 km from central Phnom Penh.
  • Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum - In 1975, Tuol Svay Prey High School was taken over by Pol Pot’s security forces and converted into a prison known as Security Prison 21 (S-21). It soon became the largest detention and torture center in the country. Over 17,000 people held at S-21 were taken to the extermination camp at Choeung Ek to be executed; those who died during torture were buried in mass graves on the prison grounds. S-21 has been transformed into the Tuol Sleng Museum, serving as a testament to the crimes of the Khmer Rouge.
  • Central Market - The Central Market is an Art Deco landmark in Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital. The bright yellow building, completed in 1937, features a 26-meter high central dome with four tall, arch-roofed arms extending diagonally across the block, creating vast hallways filled with countless stalls and a variety of goods.
  • Independence Monument - An Angkorian-style tower, this unique structure is located in the heart of the capital. It was built in 1958 to commemorate Cambodian Independence Day, marking the country’s liberation from French colonial rule on November 9, 1953.
  • Statue of King Father Norodom Sihanouk - The Norodom Sihanouk Memorial is a monument honoring former King Norodom Sihanouk, located in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The bronze statue stands 4.5 meters tall and is housed under a 27-meter high stupa in the park east of the Independence Monument.
