Highlights
  • Prasat Beng Mealea - Bang Melea means “lotus pond”. The name of this World Heritage Site aspirant is also transcribed Bung Melea, Beung Mealea or, more often, Beng Mealea. This jungletemple is located 77 km east of Siem Reap by road, and 50 km away from Angkor, as the crow flies.
  • Banteay Srei Temple - Most visitors asked which was the most beautiful temple they saw in Cambodia, will answer: Angkor Wat was great, but we love Banteay Srei most. And Cambodians will tell you: As long as you have not seen Banteay Srei you have not seen Cambodia. Indeed, Banteay Srei is a top candidate for a competition: Which is the nicest temple in the world?
What is special about Banteay Srei, is its abundance in carvings and the perfect harmony of architectural and sculptural art. Actually, at Banteay Srei building and ornamentation is nearly undiscernable, as in the case of the best examples of fine arts in India. But in contrast to Indian masterpieces Banteay Srei is not over-ornate. It’s design is discreet, more delightful than impressive.
  • Lolei - The Lolei was built on an artificial island slightly north to the centre of this reservoir, which therefore is also called the Baray of Lolei. As the Bakong in Rolous was a kind of model for Angkor’s Khmer temple-pyramids, so the Lolei became the prototype for the Khmer’s lake-temples, particularly the East- and West-Mebon in the East- and West-Barays of Angkor.
  • Preah Ko - Preah Ko has entrance gates called Gopurams at the east and west side, the main entrance is from the east. In between the outer and the inner enclosure walls of the temple area there were rectangular buildings called galleries, and in the south-east corner an extraordinary and well-preserved square building of unknown function, maybe a predecessor of those later Angkor edifices called libraries. It has windows with brick grills, which supposedly were ventilation holes, and rows of figures of ascetics in niches above them.
  • Bakong - The Bakong temple was built at the behest of Indravarman I and consecrated in 881. Bakong is historically remarkable as it became a kind of prototype of the typical Khmer temple pyramid, also called temple-mountain or step-pyramid. Bakong was the state- or imperial temple of its time, dedicated to the king’s Shiva-Lingam. Jayavarman II in the early 9th century is considered to be the founder of the dawning Angkor empire, now called “Kambuja-Desa”, “Kambu’s descendants’ Land”, but Indravarman I (877-889) is the first Khmer king of the now beginning Angkor era whose achievements are documented beyond doubt, namely by his own inscriptions and by clearly attributed architectural masterpieces such as Bakong and Preah Ko.

Excellent Driver with comfortable luxury car - Our driver was a lovely fellow with reasonable English. He spoke knowledgably about the sights and took us to a restaurant that was reasonably priced. Happy to deviate to show us sights not on the main drag, he also told us that he was happy to stop for photos along the way. Our trip was from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh and took around 5 hours with stops. The vehicle was one of those luxury cars with seats that had arm rests and loads of leg room. He supplied us with water. Would recommend this company to anyone.
