Highlights
  • Royal Palace Pathway - The Royal Palace is a must-see attraction when visiting the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa. Built by the great King Parakumba (1153-1186), this seven-story palace originally had 1,000 rooms, but only three stories with 55 rooms remain today. The palace was destroyed by a South Indian invader named ‘Maga.’
  • Polonnaruwa - The Shiva Devale No.II is known as the oldest building in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, dating back to the South Indian Chola dynasty period when Indian invaders constructed the city. Most buildings in the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa were made entirely of stone, which is why many structures remain in a condition similar to when they were built centuries ago. The statue of Lord Shiva’s mount, Nandi the bull, is a highlight.
  • Polonnaruwa - The Audience Hall is a memorial featuring amazing stone-carved elephants along each of its walls. Parakramabahu I’s Audience Hall is famous for its array of elephants, each looking different from the others. The entrance is particularly beautiful, with brave lions atop each side.
  • Polonnaruwa Vatadage - This sacred quadrangle is considered one of the most significant sacred monuments in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. It showcases the grandest architecture of the ancient city. The most eye-catching feature of the quadrangle is the circular Vatadage, which has four large Buddha statues surrounding the center of the shrine.
  • Kiri Vehera - ‘Kiri Vihara’ means milk white. This large stupa, located north of Lankathilaka Pilima Ge, was designed by Subadra, a queen of the great King Parakramabahu (1153-1186). The original lime plaster remains perfectly white even after almost 700 years. It is known as the best-preserved unrestored dagaba in Polonnaruwa. Originally named ‘Rupavathi Stupa,’ it is part of the Ãlahana Privena and stands 80 feet tall today.
  • Pabalu Vehera - Pabalu Vehera is considered the third-largest dagaba in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. The origin of this uniquely shaped stupa remains unknown. It was constructed by a consort of the great King Parakramabahu (1153-1186 AD).
  • Lankathilaka Viharaya - Lankatilaka Vihara is one of the most incredible structures in the ancient kingdom of Polonnaruwa. Built by the great King Parakramabahu, it features two great walls forming a narrow aisle leading to a striking, headless Buddha statue that still stands. The statue is over 14 meters tall.
  • Gal Vihara - Known as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Gal Vihara is a perfect example of a Lord Buddha statue carved from solid stone. It was constructed during the reign of the great King Parakramabahu (1153-1186 A.C). The recumbent Buddha sculpture, representing Buddha entering Nirvana, is 14 meters long. The Gal Vihara was created by expert stone sculptors from Sri Lanka.
  • Rankoth Vehera - The Rankot Vihara stupa was constructed by Nissanka Malla in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. The temple was designed in the tradition of the Anuradhapura Maha Viharaya and stands 54 meters tall.
  • Polonnaruwa - Experience authentic Sri Lankan food culture.
