Embark on an enlightening journey of natural history alongside a seasoned local guide and a geological expert. This once-in-a-lifetime experience will take you to an impeccably preserved lava shield volcano, the Budj Bim (Mount Eccles) Volcano. You have the option to also explore an ensemble of lava blisters (Tumuli)—an extraordinarily exquisite and uncommon landscape. Alternatively, we can conclude the journey with a visit to a local winery.

Budj Bim - fascinating - We toured Budj Bim with with Mike and he did an absolutely amazing job of bringing the story of the geology of the area alive for us, both as we drove out to the site and also when we were there. He managed to pitch his explanations phenomenally well with them being of interest to my husband (a metallurgist who knows a bit about “rocks”) and me (a medical receptionist who knows only a little about “rocks”). We both got to play “detective” with Mike, sorting out hypotheses for the geological events in the area and it was just FUN! Well worthwhile!

Terrific tour - we learned so much! - Fascinating tour with the knowledgeable and wonderful Mike! We had such a great afternoon with Mike learning about the volcanic geology of the region and seeing more of this beautiful region. it was great to hear about some of the recent research that has been done and discover a new way of looking at the landscape. mike is a great listener, very patient with questions and clearly loves sharing his knowledge and discovering new things to share with his tours. This tour is great!

Totally engrossing tour with wonderful guide - Mike is a brilliant tour guide and we spent a wonderful afternoon learning heaps about different kinds of volcanic activity in the area. I had booked because I have been reading about this for a research project, but Mike really brought the landscape alive for me. I got the impression he is well able to adapt his tours according to the interests of the group; and to adapt his teaching and guiding style, too, according to the levels of interest and previous understanding. He knows heaps, and keeps up with the latest research, but is also a good listener and conversationalist. He is also very sensitive to and respectful of different forms of Indigenous knowledge, though this tour is primarily about geology, and the ways we understand the landscape around us. Everything went extremely smoothly and I thought this was fantastic value. I felt we were very lucky to have Mike to ourselves for the afternoon! Thoroughly recommended.

Great Tour - My daughter loved doing the walks and having everything being explained rather than being shown photos. I really enjoyed seeing the lava stream caves and seeing how the lava did flow, very interesting tour. Lovely guide and he knew heaps of information to explain how volcanos work

Interesting Volcanic Area - There was little advance information about Mount Eccles but it turned out to be an interesting and very different old volcanic area. There were good facilities and a walking track around the crater lake. Easy to find between Portland and Hamilton..
