Highlights
  • Marina de Portimao - Located in the estuary of the River Arade, Portimão is known for its excellent sandy beaches with plenty of warm, calm waters, which make it a very alluring holiday destination.

Portimão has a long fishing tradition that developed particularly between the 19th and 20th centuries with the advent of the canning industry and tourism. Most of the buildings that you see in the streets and squares of the historic centre are from this period, as well as the building that houses the Portimão Museum, a superb refurbishment of an old cannery that received the Museum of the Year award from the Council of Europe in 2010. It pays homage to the people and the city that for centuries have lived exclusively of and for the sea.

You shouldn’t miss the simply styled Chapel of São José de Alcalar or the impressive Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception), built in the 15th century on top of a hill, and standing out in the city’s skyline; it was badly damaged by the 1755 earthquake, but retains its beautiful original Gothic portal. For a break in your meanderings, it’s best to rest in the shade of the trees of the Manuel Bivar Garden to see the fishing boats and pleasure craft sail past. Or on the promenade beside the Marina, one of the liveliest parts of the city both by day and by night.

Most of the restaurants, where you will find grilled sardines, the favourite local dish, are on the waterfront, next to the docks. Although sardines are eaten throughout the region and indeed across the country, they are particularly famous in Portimão and have a festival in their honour in August. But there are many other fish and seafood specialties to try, such as clams, whelk bean stew, casseroles and bouillabaisses. Broad beans, cornmeal (a kind of polenta) and the traditional almond- and fig-based sweets of the region are a few more in the wide range of ingredients on offer.

Praia da Rocha, about 3 kilometres from the centre, is perhaps the best known beach in the Algarve, with the picture postcard scene of its huge swathe of sand being widespread internationally. It’s been a busy seaside resort since the beginning of the 20th century, and it has a casino and offers an endless number of leisure activities. It also had great strategic importance in the 15th century. It was here that the Fortress of Santa Catarina de Ribamar was built to defend the harbour and the population from attacks by pirates, providing crossfire with the São João do Arade Fort, right in front in Ferragudo, alongside another extensive sandy beach aptly called Praia Grande.

The Praia da Rocha Fortress provides today an excellent view over the city, the river and the sea, which acquires a special charm in the evening, in the light of the setting sun. From here you can also catch sight of some of the beaches to the west, beginning with the Três Castelos Beach. Some smaller, others larger, but always framed by jagged rocks that embellish the landscape, here you’ll find Careanos, Vau, Barranco das Canas, João d’Arens, Prainha and Três Irmãos beaches. This sequence ends at the long sandy beach of Praia do Alvor and its estuary, an area of lagoons important for aquatic bird watching.

But to get a complete view of the Portimão area, you must look at it from all perspectives. For example, take a boat trip along the coast to discover beaches inaccessible by land and admire the rock formations. And those who are fans of game fishing will find this the ideal destination, because this fertile sea abounds in large species such as swordfish. To enjoy other landscapes, you can go up the estuary of the River Arade to Silves, passing between green hills. Along a short distance, you’ll find a varied range of images that will stay etched in your memory.

Beautiful coast - This was a wonderful trip! The sights in Lagos were the best! It was a long day traveling from Lisbon but we really wanted to see the Algarve region. Our guide, George, was good. He recommended a wonderful family place for lunch that had the best selection of fresh fish! Would go again in a heartbeat!

Friendly and professional - Our guide was Mr.George. We had a great time going to Algarve, car ride with a one year old had its challenges but it was still a great trip . We enjoyed it so much that we asked to book a return trip back to Lisbon with George as well. He was accommodating and picked us up from the hotel at the time we requested. Even though the ride back was a straight drive and not a tour , George honored our request to see a place we wanted and also allowed us to try a brunch spot. On the way back baby was very fussy and George made a stop for us to take care of the baby. Over all I would book with them again if we ever come back! Thank you guys for everything!

Wonderful Experience - Our driver and tour guide of the day was Luis who was super welcoming and shared so many wonderful insights about Portugal on our way to Algarve. We had a great time sharing stories with Luis. In Portimao we were able to do the boat tour to see the caves including the Benagil cave. Along the way had some wonderful piri piri chicken for lunch and saw some of the beautiful beaches in Lagos. We were happy to have booked a private tour for this day trip especially with Luis as our guide.

Our Algrave and Lagos Trip in Late December - Our (Group of 6 People) Algarve and Lagos Tour with your guide Phillip on 12/27/2022 was really excellent. Phillip did make every effort to make our trip very enjoyable and covered as much as sites as was possible during the 8 hours period. In fact he did accommodate our request to help us picking up some lost documents from police station. I would recommend this service to our friends and family in future as well.

A personal tour worth your time - A personal drive of 2 and 30 minutes to Algrave to see a spectacular coastline by boat riddled with caves. Then traveling to the most southwestern point of not only Portugal, but the whole European continent. Great views and worth the price.

Algarve - Portimao and Lagos from Lisbon. - Our trip to Portimao and Lagos from Lisbon was very good. Our driver was time. The drive was long but the beautiful views along the way made up for it. First option was a boat ride. We want to see the caves. Later we found out they threw in an extra viewing the dolphins. Our rode in a dinghy/boat (several people) far out from the shore to see some dolphins. Luckily they were there, welcomed us and put up a show. It was so delightful to see so many of them frolicking around, in front, behind, at the side of our boat. We saw two types of dolphins. First the smaller ones, then at another location, the bigger ones. The weather was so good/ sunny and balmy. Took lots of videos of dolphins in their natural habitat. From there we went to see the caves of Algarve. Beautiful caves. Then we had lunch (in your own) at one of the good restos on a beach. There we tasted the best grilled sea bream and sea bass. From there drove to Lagos. Our driver took us to see the best view points of Lagos. It was very beautiful but it was also getting dark. So our photos were not as beautiful as expected even with the use of iPhone 14 ProMax. My only suggestion for improvement would be to do the view points of Lagos first as it doesn’t take a long time. I had seen photos of Lagos when it’s sunny and bright and wished I had the same.

Bad experience with this operator - While the views were beautiful and the area wonderful I would not recommend the company Tripadvisor used for this tour. The tour guide was nearly impossible to get any straight answers out of on where we were going, what time we were expected back in Lisbon, etc. the tour was scheduled for 9 hours and it ended up taking 12 1/2 hours. We got back so late the restaurants were all closed in Lisbon and no one ate dinner. The trip also included a boat ride which we didn’t pay for until we arrived in the Algarve and the only choice the tour guide gave us was with a company he was obviously enjoying some extra compensation with for requiring us to use him. The boat ride company agent was a fast talking smart aleck who shouldn’t be associated with TripAdvisor. We have traveled for years and often use tour companies. Never again with TripAdvisor. Good luck if you decide to use this company.
