Highlights
  • Jardim de Santa Barbara - These small but attractive public gardens are located adjacent to the eastern wing of the 14th century Archbishop’s Palace. The garden takes advantage of the historic backdrop and also incorporates the medieval arches that remain of an arcade from the palace. Laid out in the 1950s the garden was designed by Jose Cardoso da Silva in the Romantic style, in keeping with its surroundings.
There are other features from the palace utilised throughout the geometric layout of the garden such as old statues, cornices and coats of arms. At the centre of the garden is a statue of Saint (Santa) Barbara on a fountain.

The Santa Barbara Garden is open all year around and is fairly central to Braga. It is a great spot to escape the bustle of the city and relax amongst the greenery and beautifully laid out beds.

Well-deserved world heritage designation. Should be on every person’s bucket list. - This was a wonderful experience and the good weather helped. Certainly someone needs to be relatively fit to do the steps, especially if they go all the way to the very bottom car park. There is a little train to take you back to the top, but inevitably quite a long queue, probably your best bet is to park at the bottom car park. Catch the train to the top explore and then walk down the steps. There is plenty of exploring to do at the top and the views are tremendous. We were lucky enough to see a wedding in the church.

Day Trip to Braga - Ricardo picked us up in Porto and spent day with us touring Braga. Fascinating city with big university, a beautiful seminary with many steps and a water-driven funicular. Shops also fun to browse. He was a superb tour guide.

Two for one deal! - The tour was great. We began in Porto near our hotel, turned out to be just the two of us for the morning. Headed to Braga and did the Bon do Jesus. This is the church with the beautiful stairs and stations of the cross on the way up. Ricardo was our guide and explained about how and when the church was built. There is a funicular that we were going to use to return to the car, but we would have to wait 30 minutes. It was built in 1828 and uses water to balance it. Ricardo asked why I had booked this heritage tour and I explained that I like the history of places. We went in to see more of old Braga. The gates and learned there was never a door on one gate, so the joke when people leave doors open in Portugal is that they are from Braga. Had a really nice lunch, then picked up another group of 11 people and went to Guimaraes. There we walked through the old city and the castle. Very good place to go. Ricardo was great as a tour guide. He was patient and answered all of my questions. He apologized for the tour running late with the extra group that joined us but we were fine with it.
