Highlights
  • Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral) - You’ll visit Sé do Porto, the city’s main Cathedral (without entering). There you’ll learn about the origin of the city, but also get a general view of contemporary Porto. From there on you’ll be walking through narrow streets and see medieval architecture of Porto’s oldest neighbourhood Sé.
  • Sao Bento Railway Station - You can’t miss out on Porto’s amazing railway station. With a main entrance hall that is fully decorated with the characteristic Portuguese tiles, São Bento is a must visit.
  • Mercado do Bolhao - Getting to know Porto also means learning a bit about it’s food culture. You’ll make a stop a the city’s main food market Bolhão, a great place to smell and taste local cheeses, fruits, vegetables and even wines
  • Avenida Dos Aliados - See Porto’s most important square, and the city’s town hall. You’ll hear about its past and learn to understand why the residents flock to this square to participate in demonstrations or just to listen to open air concerts.
  • Livraria Lello - On your way up, to a higher level in the city, you’ll pass by the famous Lello bookshop. During a short stop close by the shop, without entering, you’ll find out what’s the background story behind this beautiful, emblematical bookshop.
  • Praca Gomes Teixeira - Close to Lello bookshops is the Gomes Texeira square, where the University of Porto is located. It’s an area with student bars and a lively street life.
  • Igreja do Carmo - This church is built next to another church, the Igreja dos Carmelitos. Igreja do Carmo is hard to escape with its beautiful wall of tiles on the outside.
  • Jardim da Cordoaria - You’ll walk through the popular Cordoaria garden, in summertime a place bustling with activity, like music shows, or even theatre.
  • Torre dos Clerigos - You’ll hear about the history of the tallest tower in town, and about its Italian architect who famously was buried on the premisses of the tower, but who’s grave got ‘lost.’
  • Antiga Cadeia da Relacao - Nowadays it is a museum of photography but in the past this building was an infamous prison. One of Portugal’s best known writers spent a year there, and while inside wrote the classical Portuguese novel of the 19th century, Amor de Perdição.
  • Miradouro da Vitoria - Walk down past the prison into the cobbled stone street towards one of the best viewpoints of the city. From the Miradoura da Vitoria you’ll have an excellent viewpoint of the old city and the river.
  • Cais da Ribeira - Descending the hill you’ll end at the docks of Porto’s harbour quarter, Ribeira. A heritage site, Ribeira nowadays is the centre of a broad bars, restaurants and wine tasting places. Here the tour will come to an end.

A must-do during your visit to Porto! - In October 2023 I was in Porto with my mother for 4 days and we had a fantastic time, partly thanks to Philip. I had booked the private tour for the first morning after our arrival, but because it was raining very hard that morning we rescheduled the tour. Communication about this with Philip went very smoothly and he was also very flexible. It is extra nice that Philip speaks Dutch. When we went on the tour the next day, we had already seen many highlights from the booklets. No problem for Philip, he completely adapted the tour to our wishes to see the lesser-known, but certainly no less beautiful, parts of Porto. It turned out that we even stayed in the same neighborhood as where he lives, so he took us home to the front door and gave us many extra tips to further explore Bonfim. We also really appreciated all the local restaurant tips! In short, a private tour with Philip is a must-do during your visit to Porto!

With Philip you really get to know Porto! - With our ANWB group we will take the bus from the campsite to Porto on September 9. At 9.30 am we meet the Dutch guide Philip de Wit in Jardim da Cordoaria. He provides a great day showing a lot of the city. A good storyteller who can teach the information well. We drink coffee in Café Ceuta and have lunch in Postigo do Carvão in Ribeira. In the afternoon we visit the Burmester Port House including a tasting of Port wines and at 4 p.m. we end this fantastic day with a cruise on the Douro River with Six Bridges. The day was a success thanks to Philip!

Experience Porto the Philips way. Just do it! - During our stay in Porto we went on an excursion for 2 days with (Dutch speaking) guide Philip. He is very sympathetic and knowledgeable. The first day a 3-hour tour of Porto. Very informative, fascinating and just plain fun. He took his time and took everyone into account. The second day a bus ride to the Douro valley. A visit to the church in Lamego, picnic among the vineyards, boat trip on the Douro in a Rabelo boat. Things didn't go completely smoothly, but Philip made sure everything went well. It's nice to have someone with you who speaks the language. Philips made our stay in Portugal unforgettable.

A must for those experiencing the city of Porto for the first time...! - We got to see most of the highlights of the beautiful city at a leisurely pace. So all you have to do is follow Philip, so that you can enjoy the buildings, surroundings and activities of the residents to the fullest. We asked for juicy stories that would be easy for two teenagers to digest (if not, they would give up after 10 minutes) and not fall into just dry history with dates and names. By mainly talking about what daily life is like in the past and present, Philip has managed to weave that 'drier information' perfectly into his stories. By asking the right questions, everyone remained involved. This interaction gave him the opportunity to perfectly sense which next stop we would find interesting. I suspect that this makes every walk different. When we visit a city unknown to us, we always book a Dutch-speaking guide (who lives there) because that is the fastest, nicest and most understandable way to get to know a city. In addition, you also get the most authentic inside information (restos, best tips to do, fun facts) from a local. Philip has completed his mission for us 100% with the right passion. TOP!

Good tour for young and old! - Our tour of Portugal also includes a visit to Porto. We had short time and wanted to get a good impression of the city. Philip gave us a wonderful tour. In a short time we recognized the city in a relaxed way. You took us into traditions, history and we visited fantastic places. Thank you Philip, in your tour you showed us the beauty of Porto. It's amazing how you got even 2 children aged 6 and 9 excited!

Amazing private tour in Porto! - Philip was an awesome tour guide through the hills, valleys and the stunning riverfront of beautiful Porto. We also got to meet his partner, Ana. They make a great team! They were both very friendly and informative during a full day walking tour which brought together history (Edward the Navigator!), port wine barrels, a golden church, a park with walking peacocks, hidden side streets and even an impromptu concert by an all-girl band in Harry Potter garb along the magnificent Rebeira! Every monument, centuries old building and park had background stories that we learned about . So much to take in! When we told Ana we wanted to buy some souvenir tiles, we were guided away from the typical souvenir stores and brought to an authentic place where she negotiated in Portuguese to get us the best price. They knew the best places to visit and the ones to avoid (the overrated Harry Potter bookstore!). We were even brought to the outdoor Base Bar for an afternoon cocktail when we needed a break. I strongly recommend Philip and his team for a private tour to truly get the value and appreciation of your investment in visiting this ancient ,beautiful city of Porto!

Thanks to Philip de Wit, we fell in love with Porto - We went to Portugal to celebrate our 10th anniversary, and how lucky we were to start our journey in Porto. I had been told about Philip de Wit from a friend who had recently hired him and we had arranged two half-day walking tours that started the afternoon we arrived and continued the next morning. What a great introduction to a wonderful country, filled with fun people, interesting sites, and local flavour provided by Philip and his wife Ana who joined us. He made sure we saw everything and went everywhere. They even got us to take a funicular and walk across the Dom Luis Bridge which I never would have done in a million years but so glad that he wouldn’t let us miss out. He knew all the shortcuts and since we only had 2 days to discover this great city, we enjoyed great laughs, Super Bock beer, these addictive Pastel de nata pastries, and even these huge ugly Portuguese sardines! Aside from being super knowledgeable, they were great company and we left them as friends. We would highly recommend Philip to show you the sites and sounds of a most amazing place. Had we known, we would have stayed longer!

Private tour Port & Douro Cruise - Philip had provided a local tour guide for the Douro cruise. He was super enthusiastic to talk about his region and fortunately knew a lot of local history. The cruise itself was definitely worth it, especially with nice weather. The 2 tastings (Port & wine) afterwards were great, but we especially found the lunch at a local restaurant where all guests shared the same typical Portuguese menu to be an experience. Our 2nd day was the private Porto (culinary) tour with Philip. It's just great that a lot of importance is given to perhaps less touristy tips and sights. Philip is a very pleasant guide and you get a very good impression of Porto and its history. Recommended !

An excellent experience. - We took the tour with a group of 38 people and enjoyed the walk, the stories about the past and present of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Despite the ongoing construction of the metro, Philip has set up a nice walking tour so we saw a lot of Porto.
