This is one of Portugal’s most romantic spots, known for royal gifts and since 1210, when Afonso II gave the town and Castle to his wife, D. Urraca, as a wedding present. In 1282, D. Dinis and Queen Santa Isabel also spent their honeymoon here. The town of Óbidos, surrounding the Castle, is famous for ginjinha, a popular cherry liqueur. Whether with or without cherries, ginjinha served in a chocolate cup is a must-try.
