Super way to learn about the past in Portsmouth. - Excellent walk around old Portsmouth, Steve is very knowledgeable and has researched the area very well. He gave us a lot of information but made it very interesting and told some very funny tales. He does it for free with any donations going to cancer research so please support him and have an enjoyable time in doing so.

Excellent city tour ! - Steve was very knowledgeable and gave us a really good overview of the city history. He helped us to go to places we may not have found on our own - including the oldest pub in Portsmouth. He customised the tour to our groups needs and had some good ghost stories up his sleeve. Would highly recommend !

Best thing I did in Portsmouth - brought history alive - PORTSMOUTH OF THE PAST WALKING TOUR The tour guide is a charming person with a great depth of knowledge and has done a lot of research for his tour. He worked in the area and docklands for many years so knows a lot about the life that once took place there. The stories about the era, the local knowledge, the characters of note, and the lives of people in the past you would never otherwise hear about. It is a very personalised tour; the Old Portsmouth became alive with characters, with legends of ghost stories, the side of Old Portsmouth in the days of sailing ships and the rough side of life - where the city ends and the wild west days begin. The guide pointed out the architecture and special buildings of note. The walk encompassed a range of eras and brought a special atmosphere to understanding the amazing histories of Old Portsmouth. I especially enjoyed the stories of ghosts and learning that Charles II was married at the little church there, and that Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth. I wish I could remember everything. I would do the tour again as the tour guide constantly adds to his information. The tour guide keeps on researching the area, the things he's noticed that other people would bypass, he goes to great effort to solve mysteries and find lost stories of the past and people who often don't go reported in history - sometimes ordinary people who got involved in something out of their control, sometimes larger than life characters or eccentrics. The walk was wonderful and it really made my visit to Portsmouth the best thing I did. The guide says at the beginning that it is a free tour but if you feel he has entertained you, he'd be grateful for any contribution which he splits and donates to Cancer research. I wish I could have contributed more to the voluntary guide as his passion, calm presence, and delightful, well-researched , and delivered tour deserves to be paid a good donation. When I saw that to visit the Spinnaker Tower was around £16, this Old Portsmouth tour deserves as much or more - for the time, dedication, research, and very nicely guided tour. A lovely person to spend the afternoon with walking around a lovely and historic place. Many thanks to my guide.
