Highlights
  • Peneda-Geres National Park - The Peneda-Gerês National Park (PNPG), with its 700 km2, goes from the Mourela plateau to the one in Castro Laboreiro, and includes the mountain ranges of Peneda, Soajo, Amarela and Gerês. The only Portuguese National Park presents na impressive bothanical diversity - woods, forests, riparian vegetation, peatlands and moist woods – with special relevance to the several rare and endemic species. The PNPG is home to some of the most important oak forests in Portugal and interesting semi-natural habitats that shelter a diversity of animals with differentiated constitution: endemic (gold-striped salamander), endangered (iberian wolf), limited distribution species (whinchat)… In the agricultural mosaic the prairies and lime meadows stand out. Rich historical and cultural heritage (megalithic necropolis, traces of Romanization, castles, granaries, ovens, mills, dams, terraces, etc.) to which must be added the curious implantation of mountain villages and the presence of well-preserved traditional architecture sets.

Additional Information

We’ll drive up and down the hills of Gerês and show you what few people ever get to enjoy. A Keen Tours day trip to Gerês offers a complete experience unfolding the History, Culture and Nature on the Peneda-Gerês National Park.

Explore the mountains in a small group setting, hiking through centuries old paths that cut through luxuriant woods and reaching the best viewpoints for fantastic views.

Experience a forest included in the European Network of Biogenetic Reserves and a bit of the 318 km (198 miles) of the geira – the roman highway Via XVIII from Braga (former Bracara Augusta) to Astorga (Asturica Augusta), in Spain.

Depending on the weather, bathe in the fresh, clear waters of the mountain waterfalls or soak in the hot springs used since (at least) the romans, admire the newborn baby horses in the woods or enjoy the magnificent colour palette of the leaves falling – whatever the season, the tour is bound to amaze you.

Tour in Geres - Although we started the trip in a foggy and raining day, our tour guider, Pedro, filled the trip with a lot of interesting staff, from local history to wildlife, animal and plants. We, my husband and I, are both not outdoor type and learned a lot from Pedro. Have you sit in a hot spring in a raining day? We did. It was quite interesting experience. The lunch was in a small local restaurant, but the food was fresh and amazing. Thanks Pedro and Rita to arrange this wonderful tour.

100% recommend - Pedro is one of a kind. His knowledge of the plants, trees, wildlife and history is amazing. Every tour he does is different not to mention no one else on your tour. Top it off we had a great lunch and ended the day soaking in the hot springs.

Amazing - We had an amazing tour experience in Geres even in a rainy day! The guide Pedro is such a pleasant, knowledgeable and considerate person. He brought us to different view spots that you can appreciate the variety of this national park. On the way, he gave very informative introduction about area including it’s culture and history. It was unlucky that it rained the whole day, but surprisingly we see a very special image of the park and enjoyed it a lot! We recommended this to everyone!

Must-Go Amazing Tour - Absolutely Fantastic! Both Rita and Pedro are super helpful. Pedro is postgraduate from Geography and Geology therefore he was able to explain all the wildlife, the plants and mountain formation etc so well both in easy and 'professional' way. Wonderful experience! ' Nice and clean horse riding school! Super nice food at lunch! Rita and Pedro also have this small little shop who help small local producers to sell their products. Very heartwarming.

Gerês trip - Several family members were visiting Porto and my sister in law and I wanted to get out of the city, so I booked a Gerês Park tour on Get Your Guide, which subcontracts to Keen Tours. We were picked up in Porto by Pedro. He first asked us what our interests were—I said the Iberian wolf and Allison stated she just wanted to see the park. Pedro obviously knew his way around the park and he organizes the tour based on interest and fitness level of his group. He only does private tours, so these are not mixed with other travelers. We drove to a remote area of the park & hiked up huge rocky escarpements to the shepherds corral. Although, as expected, I did not see a wolf, I saw many wolf tracks in the bog and some scat! The vistas from the mountain area & the corral were simply amazing. We saw NO other people during our hike in this beautiful wilderness. After an invigorating jaunt, we went to a local place for a traditional abundant lunch, even including vino verde. In the afternoon, we had a driving tour of the park stopping to see the Roman milestones and waterfalls. To top off our day, just after sunset, we went to Spain (an unexpected additional country!) to soak in the hot springs under the full moon. There is a bit of driving as Porto is about an hour’s drive from Gerês Park. That’s the only downside, but it was punctuated by friendly conversations with Pedro. Pedro is exceptionally well educated on natural history, politics and the environment. Pedro and his wife Rita, own Keen tours and I can attest that this is a company that any socially conscious traveler can support. Keen Tours was a highlight of our experience in Portugal and I would highly recommend this company (pro tip—schedule directly with Keen Tours for the best value)
