Highlights

Beijing - In the morning, your hiking tour guide and driver with car will come to meet you at your hotel lobby. Then, you will be transferred to drive to the Great Wall (about 2 hours without traffic jam, and closer to 2.5-3 if runs into a jam). You will first arrive Great Wall at Simatai West (the east gate entrance of the Jinshanling Great Wall). Simatai Great Wall is located along the ridges, and it takes about 30 minutes to go up there.

You will see an amazing view from one of the highest points on the way, and have some snacks and drinks during your break time.

After 3 to 4 hours hiking, we will walk down some local restaurant to enjoy some tasty lunch with local flavor.

The end of tour, you will meet our driver in the parking lot, do some final post-hike stretches, and jump in the car for a nap or reflections on the day’s hike at the Great Wall. Depending on traffic heading into the city, and the distance from the expressway to your hotel, the drive home may range from 2-3 hours.

Winding along the mountain ridge from Simatai West to Jinshanling, this journey takes you amongst ancient, deteriorating watch towers. The site is incredibly picturesque! It includes 15 watch towers of varied architectures (some with two or three floors, others with flat tops), and a steep landscape that provides shifting viewpoints and expansive vistas. This segment of the wall is untamed, decayed, conserved, and primitive. With clear weather, it’s a wonderful place to click stunning pictures. If you prefer a herculean hiking trip, this is one you can’t afford to miss! (the total hiking duration is between 3 and 4 hours).

Less traveled portion of the great wall, on a fantastic winter day - Bruce was knowledgeable and a good climber. The trip was one of the highlights for the three teenagers (all grew up in the US). The scenery was better than the popular Great Wall sites in that it is more "authentic" (many parts are not repaired so showing the rust and true history--warning: you need to be more careful as side walls are missing in some parts, so small children are not recommended on this trip). The hike is of appropriate length and difficulty (for teenagers and healthy people under 70). And on a clear winter day, our hike with Bruce was truely unforgettable. Thank you again Bruce!

We were a little sceptical about the... - We were a little sceptical about the crowds on the GWOC considering we visited during peak tourist season. However, since this section of the wall is a few hours away from the city, we were very pleased to not find any crowd at the wall during our hike. The travel in and out of the city may be something you would want to factor, in case you have little time in the city. But if time is not an issue for you, it is totally worth opting for this tour. Our guide was very friendly and since we were 2 vegetarians in the group - she had taken care of making necessary dietary arrangements. Honestly one of the best tours we have done on Viator. The scenery is just out of this world!!! Also there are umpteen options for photography without anyone photobombing your memories!!

While the drive from Beijing was... - While the drive from Beijing was long, the hike on the Great Wall was worth it. The view is absolutely beautiful and our group was so glad we were able to see the older, not reconstructed parts of the wall. The hike was difficult, so keep that in mind before booking the tour.
