Highlights
  • Abbazia di Montecassino - The Abbey of Montecassino is one of the most known Abbeys in the world. In 529 Saint Benedict chose this mountain to build a monastery that would host him and those monks following him. Within the centuries the Abbey has met magnificence and destruction many times, and has always come out of its ruins stronger. In 577 Langobards destroyed it, then Saracens in 887. In 1349 a violent earthquake occurred and in February 1944 a bombardment almost flatted it.

Additional Information

This excursion certainly deviates from the traditional tourist paths. The Montecassino Abbey holds a prominent position among the world’s most renowned Abbeys. The mountain was chosen by Saint Benedict in 529 for the construction of his monastery. In February 1944, a heavy bombardment nearly decimated the Abbey. Legend states that when Christ succumbed on the cross, the veil of the Jerusalem temple was torn, leading to the creation of three deep fissures in the rock, which is now known as the Split Mountain of Gaeta. The Sanctuary of the SS. Trinity is situated atop this cliff. To the left of the church, one of these fissures leads to the Turk’s Cave - a pilgrimage site and captivating destination for tourists, with links to many other narratives and renowned figures.

Best Day - Tacked this day trip on the end of a 13 day tour of Italy. This was for my father-in-law to see Montecassino and Gaeta where he was stationed during the Vietnam war. Rossana, what can I say. She made it the best day of our time in Italy. It was so personalized, warm, friendly and casual. We saw the sites and ate good food and strolled the streets of Gaeta. I could not have asked for a better experience for my father-in-law and I believe it will be a memory that he will hold dear for a very long time.

Great time at greatest place… - The Tour was a great experience, it is a combination of history at Montecasino Abbey and Gaeta natural beauty. Lunch was excellent (pasta of course). It looks a little expensive, but worth at the end. Rossana was great, funny and knowledgeable…

A visit back in time. - My father-in-law was at Monte Cassino in 1943 when the Allies invaded Italy so this was a trip to see what he had talked about so often. We came to understand that ordeal better. But we also visited an area that is not often visited by international tourists let alone Italians. It was a unique experience pulling back the curtain on the vanished monastic life. The vistas from this highpoint are fantastic.
