Andino forest and highland trek - Our native trekking guide Manuel took us just ten minutes from the port to the edge of the Andino forest. On the way he described the hike, asked questions of our interests and comfort with trekking, and briefed us on what we would see and experience. Manuel's english is excellent and soon we were in the forest and enjoying the upward rolling hillsides through groves of native trees. Manual stopped from time to time describing the area, the fuan, and the flora and giving us a really good perspective of the nature of patagonia. We had a really clear day, and hiked up and out of the forest into the wind-swept highland, populated with shrubby trees and moist tussocks of moss-like vegetation. The view was spectacular and Manuel pointed out the various landmarks on the horizon, noting that many had never been explored by man. We returned back the way we came at an easy pace, chatting all the while. Soon we were back in town and enjoying a warm and welcome lunch at a local restaurant. We were treated to local specialities, which hit the spot. Our trek was about 10km with 340m elevation and we took a little over 3 hrs. We are in our 60s and 70s. It was January, mid-summer in the south. Manuel was the perfect host and guide, attentive to our abilities and interests, engaging, and with thorough knowledge of the land and conditions. I would highly recommend this activity to anyone visiting Punta Arenas who likes the outdoors and a good hike.
