- Rashid Citadel of Qaitbay - Your journey begins with a pickup from your hotel in Alexandria to visit the Qaitbay Citadel, one of the most significant fortresses along the Mediterranean coast. Constructed by the Mamluk sultan al-Ashraf Abu al-Nasr Qaitbay between 882 AH/1477 AD and 884/1479 AD, it stands on the remnants of Alexandria’s Lighthouse and was a key defense against naval invasions.
Built from limestone, the citadel covers an area of about 17,550 m². It is encircled by an outer wall equipped with defense towers.
An inner wall encloses the citadel’s courtyard, which contains several rooms used as barracks and storage.
The entrance to the citadel leads to the courtyard, where the main tower is situated in the northwest. This imposing square fort has three floors and is flanked by half-circular towers at each corner, featuring protruding balconies for city defense.
