- Rashid Citadel of Qaitbay - The tour begins with a pickup from your hotel in Alexandria and heads to the Qaitbay Citadel, one of the most significant fortresses along the Mediterranean coast. Constructed by the Mamluk sultan al-Ashraf Abu al-Nasr Qaitbay between 882 AH/1477 AD and 884/1479 AD, it was built on the remnants of Alexandria’s Lighthouse and served as a defense against naval invasions.
The citadel, made of limestone, covers an area of about 17,550 m². It is encircled by an outer wall equipped with defense towers.
An inner wall encloses the citadel’s courtyard, which contains several rooms used as barracks and storage.
The entrance to the citadel leads to the courtyard, where the main tower is situated in the northwest. This imposing square fort has three floors and features half-circular towers at each corner, with protruding balconies designed for city defense.
