Highlights
  • Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo - originally used as a Palatine Church of Arian cult, today it allows us to reconstruct the evolution of the Byzantine wall mosaic from the Theodoric to the Justinian age. Inside, the 26 Christological scenes make up the largest monumental cycle of the New Testament.
  • Mausoleo di Galla Placidia - it was built around the middle of the 5th century, at the behest of Galla Placidia, who ruled the Western Roman Empire.

This small Latin cross mausoleum, externally is very simple, while inside it has a rich mosaic decoration.

The countless stars of the dome have struck the imagination and sensitivity of visitors over the centuries, as well as outstanding personalities such as the great poet Dante Alighieri, who drew inspiration from them for the drafting of some verses of the Divine Comedy.

  • Basilica di San Vitale - It is one of the most important monuments of early Christian art in Italy.

The monument is of the sixth century, of clear eastern influence, it has an octagonal plan, surmounted by a large frescoed dome.

When one enters the basilica, the gaze is captured by the high spaces, the stupendous mosaic decorations of the apse, and the extraordinary representation of the imperial couple from Byzantium, Giustiniano and Teodora, with their parades.

  • Battistero Neoniano (Battistero degli Ortodossi) - one of the oldest monuments in the city, in simple brick on the outside but rich in marble, stucco and mosaics with a clear Hellenistic-Roman influence on the inside.

Dominating the dome, commissioned by Bishop Neone in the mid-fifth century, is the scene of the Baptism of Christ surrounded by a very refined procession of the twelve Apostles that stands out against a brilliant background of blue tesserae. Inside there is still the baptismal font from the Renaissance period, which takes up the octagonal shape of the Baptistery plan and which preserves the ambo from the 5th century.

  • Archiepiscopal Museum - (visit independently) which houses the Chapel of Sant’Andrea: depicting the glorification of Christ in an anti-Arian key, the only example of an early Christian archiepiscopal chapel still intact today

Mind blowing educational tour to five of the eight UNESCO sites in Ravenna - Our guide, Maria, was just the best. She had to field all kinds of questions while still keeping the tour on track. As with any group, there is always someone who seems to need to always be up front, demand more time, and ask questions they themselves can answer so as to look smart. Maria was cool through the whole process, and made sure everyone could keep up, and hear stories related to our actual trip. Her knowledge of history and the stories of the mosaics was phenomenal. We saw more in three short hours than we could have on our own, and we got great background information at the same time. Her love of her city was evident. Traveling with an educated local made this economical experience one of our best tours ever. Highly recommended.

A must do. Don’t hesitate, book now!!! The Mosaics are stunning. - The tour was very good and gives a lot of background information (not to be found in a travellers guide) and normal information. It makes the visit to this beautiful buildings with their incredible mosaics very special. We had such a terrific guide Marco Torri (company Guidopolis). He knows a lot, he has humor and his English is perfect. I should say don’t hesitate, book today.

The splendid mosaics of Ravenna and beyond. - An excellent idea to book a guided tour at the Tourist Office (3 hours, but which pass without you almost realizing it) of the most important UNESCO Heritage sites: the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the Basilica of San Vitale, the Neonian Baptistery and the Chapel of S.Andrea of the Archbishop's Museum, with all their mosaics. Also included was a visit to Dante's Tomb and the Basilica of S. Francesco, where his funeral was held. The guide, Cristian, was not only competent but also very nice, and he alleviated the heat of the day.

The mosaics were great... - The mosaics were great and our guide talked us through them in great detail. She was mostly lovely. We nearly ran between the various stops. Our guide was rather short stature, did not carry a sign and did not stop to wait for stragglers who got caught in traffic on the streets. We speed walked about 6 miles. I recommend that guides hold signs and wait for group members to congregate before turning corners. This was our 9th such tour on this trip and most guides watch their groups more.
