- Monsaraz Castle and Walls - Situated at the top of a hill in the Alentejo plain and near the Guadiana, Monsaraz is a medieval village protected by walls, with shale streets and whitewashed houses. Its castle was a look-out point for the Guadiana from where the border with Castile was observed and today it is classified as a National Monument, and it is a privileged viewpoint of the Alqueva Dam.

The ancient town of Monsaraz, seized by the Moors in 1167, exhibits typical cobbled lanes and homes adorned in a traditional whitewash. Encircled by fortifications, it has been hailed as one of Portugal’s 7 Wonders in the Monument Villages category, boasting an abundance of local skilled crafts such as weaving, Alentejo blankets, ceramics and creations from cork, metal and wrought iron.
