- Leiðarendi Lava Cave - Situated near Reykjavik, Leiðarendi stands out as a pristine lava cave that remains relatively undisturbed and is readily accessible. Its infrequent visitation compared to other lava tubes can be attributed to its internal layout. The absence of constructed walkways necessitates the use of durable hiking boots for navigation. While it offers sections where crawling is optional for those seeking an extra thrill, there are also more navigable parts that lead to the same destination, forming a sort of figure-eight pattern.
With our tours typically involving small groups, we’re able to cover the entirety of the cave’s offerings, though this may be adapted to suit the preferences of the group. Spanning a length of 900 meters, the cave showcases distinctive geological features. During the exploration, your guide will pause at various points to recount the ominous tale behind the cave’s name and to explain the geological significance of Leiðarendi and other lava caves.

Ever pondered what lies beneath Iceland’s lava fields? Come join us on an exploration of the secret realms beneath The End of the Road, inside Leidarendi Cave. This 900-meter long, pitch-black lava tube is a circular showcase of stalactites, stalagmites, and unexpected vibrant colors from lava formations. A lava tube is a result of volcanic eruptions, formed when the surface lava hardens, leaving flowing magma beneath. After the lava flow stops and the rocks cool, a long, empty cave takes shape – this geological marvel is referred to as a lava tube.
Less frequented than other lava tubes, the unique structural features of Leidarendi draw fewer visitors. Walking paths lack sturdy wooden platforms, hence reliable hiking boots are needed. The cave offers optional areas for crawling, for those seeking an adventure. However, easier routes can also be taken to reach the same destination, logically resembling a loose figure of 8.
