Highlights
  • Rauðhólar - Here we will see Raudholar pseudocraters. They are formed when 1,100°C molten lava flows over ponds and swamps, causing the water to boil.

The pressure of the steam from the boiling water then causes explosions, which in turn creates the pseudocraters.

  • Elliðaárdalur - Ellidaardalur is a hidden nature gem inside Reykjavik with the Ellidaarvirkjun (hydropower plant). See the first electric hydro plant in Iceland supplying electricity to Reykjavik with 4 generators from Sweden. And how they manage to prevent the Salmon from going up the river at the same time.
  • Laugardalur Park - We have a look at the first geothermal water pump station in Reykjavik, established in 1930. And the washing pools, and the benefits for the residents to have accessibility to hot water for free.
  • Nautholsvik Geothermal Beach - Nauthólsvík is a beach with imported golden sands, unlike most others in Iceland which are covered in black ash. It looks out across a narrow bay to a picturesque district of Kopavogur, a town within the Greater Reykjavík Area, and has a small cove into which the geothermal water is pumped.
  • Grotta Lighthouse - Grótta is a nature reserve on the tip of the Seltjarnarnes Peninsula, in the north-westernmost part of the Greater Reykjavík Area. It has been a nature reserve since 1974 due to its abundant birdlife.

Fun, informative and unforgettable!! - We loved this tour and our guide was a great historian. We wanted to see sights off the beaten path and he delivered. The tour included several beautiful parks and gardens as well as historic sites dedicated to the day to day difficult life of the 19th and early 20th century citizens. We would highly recommend adding this tour to your list of must sees. You’ll get away from the busy touristy region and see many of the places where the residents go to get away from the crowds. But one of the things we enjoyed most was after asking him about golf courses in the area he took us to see one. It was a riot to see the golfers on this incredibly flat course try to battle the gusty very gusty conditions.

A four hour tour of Reykjavik - We took a 4 hour tour of the city. We asked our host to show us what he found most interesting to visit. In response, he gave us a tour of the parks around the city and how geology shaped its history and development. This included a visit to the original hydroelectric power station which is now a museum. Our guide was particularly knowledgeable about the ship harbor and we learned a great deal about how seafood is handled and processed. Very well done!
