  • How Bürgermeister Heinrich Toppler transformed this town into one of the most important cities in the area
  • The very strict urban conservation orders from Rothenburg
  • The story of the Town Hall and its tower
  • The Master-Builder’s House with its stone sculptures with the seven virtues and seven deadly sins

  • The “Master draught” story

  • Marienapotheke (St. Mary’s Pharmacy)
  • The Medieval Crime and Punishment Museum
  • The Plönlein, considered to be one of the most photographed spots in Germany
  • The Town Wall
  • Church of St. James

The Market Square is the center of urban life in Rothenburg and also the place where some of the most important tourist attractions can be admired like the Town Hall, the Councillors’ Tavern and St. George’s Fountain. If you are up to it, climb up the 50m Town Hall Tower (tickets not included and based on availability) for some special views and good photo opportunity and listen to the story of the Town Hall Renaissance building from the 16th century.

Do not miss the Master-Builder’s House, one of the “loveliest renaissance house in Rothenburg” with its stone sculptures with the seven virtues and seven deadly sins. Close is also the Marienapotheke, a 15th century mansion built by Mayor Jagstheimer. South of the Market Square we will see the Medieval Crime and Punishment Museum, dedicated to torture tools and equipment and not for the faint-hearted.

Then we pass the famous Plönlein (Flat Square), a road crossing found in all travel books of Germany. The triangular square formed by the roads is present in pop culture, history and in your memory forever.

The wall around the Old Town creates a head-shaped figure on the outskirts of the old town. For a good view over the city, we will also climb it. Now to forget is also the Church of St. James, with its ”The Last Supper” masterpiece of Tilman Riemenschneider. This is the only protestant church that has a roman-catholic relic in Germany.

End your tour in the Old Town and enjoy a leisurely walk on your own through the narrow streets or just enjoy a local beer and some traditional dishes in one of the historical buildings close by.

Additional Information

For anyone traversing the Romantic Road, the visit to Rothenburg ob der Tauber (translated as ‘over the Tauber River’) is indispensable. Often depicted as the epitome of an enchanting German town, it gives tourists an impression of being in a middle ages themed park. As a result, Rothenburg holds the most stringent preservation rules across Germany. Being a Free Imperial City since the 13th century, it emerged as a significant city state during the middle ages. The town owes its survival from complete demolition during the Thirty Years War in the 17th century to the Ex-Mayor Nusch who drank ‘Master draught’, a 3 litres gulp of wine. A stroll through its ancient town, amid the cobblestone bylanes and the 14th-century protection wall, will render it evident why this place is deemed unforgettable.

Excellent overview - This city tour (with a very nice tour guide) should be an absolute must for every visitor to this delightful city. Not only are you pointed out to many of the landmarks, but you also get a lot of information that is not found in the printed guidebook. You are also pointed out a lot of things that you can visit on your own later. Highly recommended!

A visit not to be missed. - As part of our Viking River Cruise we visited Rothenburg, a medieval walled city in Bavaria. It is one of the most scenic places on the planet- from its wall, gates, guard houses, businesses, churches, etc. It was a "bucket list " place to visit for me and I loved the entire experience. There are many great bakeries and restaurants where you can obtain authentic German foods.

Quaint village, worth visiting - Very informative & knowledgeable guide, covered a variety of history of Rothenburg. She showed us lots of other options we could take that might be of interest, which most we did end up doing.

Everything we were looking for in Rothenburg! - This was a fantastic experience through and through. From the historical background that was provided to the spots we visited, it was all perfect. Unfortunately, I forgot the name of our guide but he was amazing and went above and beyond to ensure that our needs were met including recommendations for restaurants, best ice cream and other spots to visit that were not on our tour. Would highly recommend this to anyone interested in a tour during their time in Rothenburg.

Trip to Germany with my adult daughter ( no category for this, so checked family with teens) - Camilla was fantastic! She was knowledgeable, and made it very interesting. Many things were presented that i knew nothing about previously. The only thing missing was actually walking the wall, but she described much of it and said it wasn't part of the tour, so we did it immediately after the tour. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour, especially if Camilla gives it! Photos are; from tour, then us in the exact spot 25 years earlier.

Beautiful Rothenburg - The tour guide gave useful and interesting information. She was nice and talkative. My only critic is that she seems like she was performing in a theater all the time.
