Meaningful morning walk around the historical city of Sakai - 3 of us ladies just joined this knife walking tour to accompany 1 friend who is planning to help her son to buy a special knife in Sakai. We dont know what to expect for the tour except to learn more about knife-making. It turned out the factory that we visited isn't the brand/type of knife my friend's son wanted. Our Guide Remy (Hope I spell his name correctly) even made an effort to bring us to the knife factory that my friend wanted to go. However, the factory was closed for lunch and we had to return in disappointment in not getting the knife but not with our walking tour. Its a good experience to know about Sakai and its history.

Unique and awesome discoveries - The tour was really interesting! The fact that we were able to discover multiple aspects of Sakai was a big plus. The combination of the historic explanations and seeing the items/tasting was rich. The guide has a LOT of knowledge especially everything related to the knives and we could feel how passionate he was about the craft. His passion and excitement were contagious. Being able to see how things were made and being able to buy them from the source was also amazing. Japan Tour Adventure is the only agency that offers this tour and we felt really privileged. Thank you so much for the tour and also the bonus restaurant recommendation at the end which tasted also amazing!! 😁

Very exciting and fun adventure into japanes knife making - This very private tour was amazing. Our little group of 5 followed our super fund Tourguide Remi into a piece of Japanese knife making history. It all started by a greetings with traditional mochi at a local shop and went on to the knife making "factory" more like a small shop where you can see the craftsmen work on the final steps of making the knives. We saw them making the edge, polishing and ending the handle. During the Tour you are allowed to ask as many questions as you like and Remi will translate them to the craftsmen. I was allowed to film and take pictures of almost everything that is very rare regarding japanese (secret) traditions! The tour included a visit to the local knifes museum and a hands on sharpening lesson above the factory. In the end I even got a beautiful Damaskus knife from there for a great price! 100% recommend this tour if you want to know more about knife making in Japan and want to have a fun morning !

Osaka Memories - Remy was a great guide! His unique experience as a foreigner living in Japan provided such insight and helped us to better understand the culture. The itinerary we selected for our private tour included Sakai and the Osaka Food Tour. It was an amazing day that was a highlight of our trip to Japan. My husband continues to rant about his experience at the knife factory, and my grown kids loved the food samplings. For me, I was glad to have made everyone happy!! Thank you JTA for such a great day!

Rare glimpse into Japanese craftmanship - ‘Glad this tour still had available slots for us on its morning schedule. We had a 4-hour window before our flight back home. Remi was the perfect guide with the history of the area and its crafts at his fingertips and his excellent nihonggo to facilitate communication with the locals. ‘Went home happy with our haul: daifuku (the best we’ve had so far), a chef’s knife and wet stone. ‘Wish we had more luggage space.

Refined Japanese knife workmanship - There is a saying that everything starts from Sakai where many cultural elements origin here - tea ceremony, Japanese sweets, incense sticks. We came here to learn about the art of manufacturi g blades and different kinds of knives. There is a museum showing the amazing details on how the Japanese use different kinds of knives for cutting different things from vegetables, fruits, different parts of the fish & meat.

Bad communication - I tried contacting the tour operator several times via message and phone calls to find out the length of the tour as I couldn’t find it in the description. Nobody answered any message or voicemails. The day before the tour I contacted Viator directly. A nice lady said she believed the tour was 4 hours, so I said I’d like to cancel the tour. She said Viator would handle it. The morning of the tour I received a call from the tour operator saying they were waiting for me, and that I was delaying the other guests. The afternoon after the tour I received this message: Dear Ernesto, Thank you for contacting Japan Tour Adventure. Our sincere apologies for not answering your message sooner. The average time of the tour (3 to 4 hours), is clearly mentioned on the tour page. We also heard from your guide today, as you did not join the tour, that you wanted to cancel. You did not book directly with us, and your cancelation request, which you mentioned to our guide, came in less than 24 hours before the tour departure. We also did not receive any refund request through Viator, so you were officially considered a No-show. For any refund request, with a valid reason, don't hesitate to get in touch with Viator directly. The communication with the tour operator and among the tour operator and Viator should’ve been handled in a more efficient way. I hope Viator manages this and get my refund, even if the tour operator says it will not.
