Madrasah is an Arabic term meaning school. Mirzo Ulugbek, the grandson of Amir Temur, was a king and scholar in the 15th century. New subjects such as Math, Medicine, Astronomy, and others were taught in his madrassah.

It is considered a masterpiece of the Timurid Renaissance. By the mid-20th century, only a grandiose ruin remained, but significant parts of the mosque were restored during the Soviet period.
