Highlights
  • Shah-i-Zinda - The Shahi Zinda complex (meaning “alive king” in Uzbek) dates from the 12th to the 20th centuries. It serves as the burial site for royalty and nobles and is considered one of the most spiritual places in Uzbekistan.
  • Hazrat Khizr Mosque - Named after a mythical saint, the Hazrat Hizr Mosque offers travelers a panoramic view of the old town. The site has hosted several buildings over time, initially a Zoroastrian temple before being converted into a mosque following the Arab invasion. The current mosque, dating from 1854, features intricately painted ceilings and plasterwork. It also houses the mausoleum of Uzbekistan’s first President.
  • Siab Bazaar - The local Siab market (meaning “black river” in Uzbek) offers travelers a variety of spices, fresh and dried fruits, and various souvenirs.
  • Bibi Khanym Mosque - The Bibi Hanim Mosque, built in the 15th century, was constructed in honor of Temur’s chief wife, Saray Mulk Khanum.
  • Mausoleum Rukhabad - The Rukhobod Mausoleum is Samarkand’s oldest surviving monument. Built by Amir Temur in 1380, this simple cream stone structure marks the burial place of Sheikh Byrhan ad Din Sagarji, a Sufi preacher who spread Islam from Asia to India and was mentioned by the Arabic traveler Ibn Battuta in the 1340s.
  • Gur Emir Mausoleum - The Gur-Amir Mausoleum (meaning “the tomb of the king” in Uzbek) dates from the 15th century.
  • Registan - Registan Square (meaning “sandy place” in Uzbek) dates from the 15th to the 17th centuries. It is a stunning architectural ensemble featuring magnificent Islamic designs and calligraphy on the facades of its mosques and madrassahs.
