The Swift Boat Captain and Crew then head back by the aircraft carrier basin and Naval Air Station North Island before returning to the Museum. The PCF 816 stands as a physical testament to the fearless commitment of numerous Swift Boat seamen, offering the public an insight into their sacrifices. The Swift Boat Sailors Association relocated PCF 816 Swift Boat to San Diego’s Maritime Museum for refurbishment and functionality in San Diego Bay.
Guests of the museum can now immerse themselves in the resonating hum of two V12 diesels, producing 980 horsepower for high velocity tours around the Bay, as retired Swift Boat Sailors and museum guides narrate their experiences as Quartermaster, Gunner’s Mate, Engineman, Radarman, Bosun’s Mate or Skipper during the Vietnam War.
These vessels were initially deployed by the Navy for coastal surveillance under Operation Market Time to prevent seaborne supplies from reaching the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army in South Vietnam. Subsequently, these boats were utilized in the waterways and canals of the Mekong Delta and the Ca Mau peninsula for special operations.
