Highlights
  • Actun Tunichil Muknal - Taking a journey into the Maya underworld at Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) or the “Cave of the Stone Sepulchre” for one of the most enlightening, epic and unique experiences of your life.

Leave the world of the living behind as you venture into the heart of the ATM Cave with your licensed guide. Recently deemed the #1 Sacred Cave destination in the world by National Geographic, the ATM cave is not only beautiful geologically with its crystalline stalactites and stalagmites, but also historically, as is a natural museum of ancient Maya artifacts, as well as a sacred burial place.
This is the final resting place of “Crystal Maiden,” an ancient Maya ceremonial victim, as well as the remains of 13 other sacrificed men, women and children. Your professional guides have led government officials, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, The British High Commission and US Embassy officials into the ATM Cave. This sacrificial site is accessed by a 45 minute drive from our office in San Ignacio.

  • Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve - Here we enter the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve and park our vehicles at the ranger post. From this point on we are on foot, hiking through the jungle for approximately 45 minutes to the entrance of the cave. To access the cave we swim across a small spring- fed pool and wade into the dark underworld of the cave that allows us access the extensive underground maze of tunnels, passageways and chambers, climaxing in the ceremonial chamber housing stoneware, ceramics, the famed crystallized skeleton of the “Crystal Maiden”.
We spend approximately 3 hours in the cave at the guidance of our experienced guides.

We enter back into the jungle world and hike to our vehicles where we relax and enjoy a homemade picnic lunch with water and soft drinks before driving back to San Ignacio.

Amazing! Shout out to Jessiah! - Amazing. One of the coolest experiences of my life. Shout out to our guide Jessiah. The cave is intimidating, but our guide made us feel secure and safe while also making it such a unique and fun experience. He guided us, literally, step by step through many challenging sections, was prepared for anything, and clearly loves what he does. Even more impressive we threw out a wide array of questions -- biology, history, geology, local knowledge, mayan culture, etc and he was able to provide an answer for all of them. This was truly a highlight of our trip. It's adventurous but so doable and Mayan Walks will take care of you!

Lights, (no) cameras, Actun! - The cave is located 7 miles from where we met with our group and our guide, Francisco. it is an exciting experience to travel through the once-Mayan city that would have occupied the area surrounding the cave. Francisco would tell us to imagine a field being full of Mayan villagers, with buildings standing where piles of rubble now stood. He was very imaginative and tried to put you into the perspective of the Mayan people like you were there back in time yourself, seeing the way things would have looked before being abandoned. There are a variety of fruits and different types of trees growing along the way that he points out, and the drive itself is unique in seeing the area the Mayans called home. once we got to the destination, it was a roughly 45 min-1hr trek through the rainforest, crossing several rivers which were around waist deep but had a rope to guide you across. it's an adventurous experience that perfectly precedes the thrills of exploring the cave. we made our entrance into the cave by swimming into and exploring for roughly 1.5 miles while Francisco explained the journey the Mayans had reaching the sacred area by nothing but torch light and carrying large ceramic vases, pots, and other artefacts along the way. He points out any significant rock formations or carvings that were left by the Mayans to help guide them through their rituals. it was a very imaginative experience to be put in their position being guided through the same path as they took centuries earlier, and to see the remains of those sacrificed and left behind makes this a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience and not just any ordinary cave. Francisco has deep reverence for the traditions and beliefs of the Maya and he is very passionate and knowledgeable about what he does. he was one of the best (if not THE best) tour guides i've ever had!

Best tour in Belize! - Eric was an awesome guide: knowledge about archeology, funny, very safety conscious, and encouraged my teen to try hard things, to even go first, over coming fears of dark, and tight places. She and the rest of us had a blast. Amazing!!!

A challenge but rewarding - I had a great time on the cave tour. It was a physical challenge but fun to explore the cave and learn of Mayan culture. Our guide Erick took great care of us. Come prepared for all the mosquitoes on the walk up!
