Highlights
  • Chippewa Square - When people reach Chippewa Square, they usually feel like something’s missing from the iconic landmark. Known by locals and tourists alike as the “Forrest Gump” square, Chippewa Square doesn’t actually have a bench like in the movie, but it’s certainly famous nonetheless! Just a stone’s throw from the famous-yet-benchless square is the Savannah Theatre, which opened in 1818. This theatre is the oldest one in the country and still produces shows nightly.
  • The Old Sorrel Weed House Museum & Tours - Savannah has no shortage of spooky stories to tell and haunted houses to tour. The Sorrel Weed House is one of the most haunted houses in the country, so it’s only fitting that it appears on our list of stops, especially for the Grave Encounters Tour. The home is also a beautiful example of the architecture and design the Antebellum period was known for.
  • Forsyth Park - Arguably one of the most important stops in Savannah, Forsyth Park’s picturesque flowers, foliage, and fountain encourage you to pause and stroll for a while. Snap a photo in front of Savannah’s iconic fountain (the one that turns green around St. Patrick’s Day!). Walk the perimeter of the park and take in the sights of Savannah’s architecture or sit for a spell under one of the many live oak trees
  • Massie Heritage Center - The Massie Heritage Center is the oldest school in continuous operation in Georgia. Opened in 1856, the center offers a “Nineteenth Century Classroom,” where students experience a school day as if they were in the late-1800s. For everyone else visiting the Massie Center, there are plenty of artifacts to learn about and exhibits to check out.
  • Cathedral of St. John the Baptist - The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is known for its part in the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade as well as its ranking as a popular wedding venue location. The cathedral is located on a corner of Abercorn Street and overlooks Lafayette Square. If there isn’t a ceremony or mass taking place, visitors are allowed to tour the cathedral, stand beneath the stunning stained-glass windows, and wander the pews.
  • The Pirates’ House - The Pirates’ House. Offering quite the contrast to the other locations on this list, The Pirates’ House opened in 1753…to real-life pirates! The inn was used by travelers and sailors, looking to rest on solid ground after roaming the seas. Although no pirates frequent the establishment now, the building serves as a restaurant, so it’s still full of boisterous, happy guests.
  • Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters - Take another step back in time when you visit the Owens-Thomas House. This mansion with its adjoining slave quarters, carriage house, and fragrant gardens were built in 1819. Guests are invited to tour the grounds to learn about the complicated, unfortunate relationship between those with and without power. The rooms are outfitted with period furniture and decorations and a few interactive exhibits.
  • Telfair Academy - Just a few blocks from the Owens-Thomas House sits the other two parts of the Telfair Museum family: the Jepson Center and Telfair Academy. The Jepson Center is Savannah’s art museum, a breathtakingly modern building home to both permanent collections and temporary exhibits. (Children can play in the Artzeum and and engage with the pieces in the interactive Techspace.) The Telfair Academy is another art museum, except this one has rooms decorated in 19th century décor as well as 19th and 20th century American and European art.
  • Reynolds Square - Reynolds Square is the epitome of Savannah’s squares. This particular block of land is filled with moss-covered live oaks and holds a statue of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. However, the square is actually named after Georgia’s first governor, John Reynolds. Nearby you’ll find the deliciously famous Leopold’s Ice Cream, The Ole Pink House, and the Lucas Theatre. Eat some food, indulge in some ice cream, catch a show, then hop back on the trolley!
  • Historic River Street - Nowadays, passersby are driving cars rather than horse-and-buggy, but the experience of wandering the aisles and checking out local vendors is quite similar!
  • Savannah City Hall - Another iconic building in Savannah is City Hall. The building opened in 1905, but its unique gold dome was originally copper. Located right off Bay Street and Factors Walk, City Hall is also a stone’s throw from plenty of other popular places in downtown, such as City Market and Ellis Square.
  • Franklin Square - Franklin Square is a last-but-not-least stop. If you’ve ridden the trolley around the entire city, you’ll have seen all that the city has to offer and still end up right in the heart of Savannah. Franklin Square (designed in 1790 and named after Benjamin Franklin) is adjacent to City Market and Ellis Square and just a few blocks up from Bay Street and River Street.
  • Savannah River - Cruise along the Savannah River and see Savannah from a different perspective!

Additional Information

Residing by the seaside certainly presents its merits and it would be utterly foolish of us not to seize them. This could be termed as the ‘sea and land’ tour option (which is likely to be your dinner dish this evening). But until that time, we strongly recommend indulging in a tranquil voyage on the Savannah River Queen paddleboat coupled with a comprehensive (90 Minute) Trolley tour.

You make the call, the boat or the trolley first, darling, because we strive to satisfy, and either choice is a win-win situation!

DO IT! - The service does not get much better than this. The concierge at our hotel arranged it perfectly... even had a shuttle pick us up at our hotel so we did not have to wait or walk or get another ride. Arthur did a fantastic job of bringing the tour alive in his magic time machine. Movie locations such as Forrest Gump; Something to Talk About, The Garden of Good and Evil; HIstoric figures, Mansions; Pirates, Education, Where to eat and imbibe, The Hanging Tree, .... bodies buried under the parking lot and streets. And if that is not enough, the dueling site and the Underground Rail Road. Lots of churches and even a statue of Methodist's own John Wesley. So, sit on the right side and you get a better view of things 90% of the time The second time we rode with Charlie Brown, with excellent narration who filled in a few different areas of history, like prohibition, importing (vs smuggling === such an ugly word) rum; hospital and yellow fever outbreak, But wait, there is more. we double booked with the River Cruise and enjoyed the air conditioning and shade on the Georgia Queen for an hour and half on the Savannah River. We skipped paying for the lunch cruise and instead went to the bar and ordered a great sandwich and drinks. The fries were excellent and HOT! Oh, yea, leave a generous tip. So, bottom Line: DO IT!

Turf n Surf Savannah - What an amazing experience! We were blessed to have Mr Komedy as our trolley tour guide. What an entertaining character he is. He made the trip exciting and fun! He gave free drinks to people, as you stepped on board, gave great restaurant reviews and plenty of tips for the best places to visit. The trolley ride was comfortable and took almost 2 hours to complete the round trip, due to traffic in the downtown area. I'd recommend sitting on the right side of the trolley, kerb side, as sitting there you have a better chance to get great pictures. We sat on the left and we couldn't always see everything very clearly. The next day we did the River Cruise which was also very good. We sat top deck in the sunshine and had great views of everything. We also saw some dolphins as an added bonus! Get to River Street in plenty of time for the cruise so you're not way at the back of the queue for boarding. All staff were polite and friendly and everything was well organized.

The driver of the trolley was very good at identifying interesting points along the route. Both thetrolley and boat was a great lesson in the history of the area.

Nice tour - Great overview of the city, landmarks and fun facts. Tour guides were great. Boat tour was short, but enjoyable. The website doesn’t mention you have to go to Boundary street to start. My tickets said to go to River Street, which didn’t work.

Disappointed in the boat tour. Loved the rest - The fact that the woman named Erica, who was at the kiosk was rude obnoxious and totally unprofessional put a damper on our entire river cruise. The land part of the trip was amazing. We had a tour guide named Arthur, who was absolutely perfect new than new knowledge that needed to be know. I would definitely recommend people to do the land tour however the boat tour unless Erica is no longer at the kiosk where is is not a pleasant way to start today.

Jackleg logistics - Tour guides were great. Inadequate info provided in advance. Had to inquire exact times. Electronic boat tour ticket was not adequate. I had to sprint to ticket office to convert ticket on phone. No, they sent me to wrong ticket office! Had to visit kiosk on corner with rep blowing smoke in my face. Too many tour companies make it more confusing than necessary.

Not dependable! - The barcode that I received from you for the Trolley Rivercruise tour was good for the Trolley but not for the cruise. The attendant at the ship said the barcode was not readable and we had to scramble to find a kiosk from Old Savannah Tours who printed out the tickets but they weren’t able to print a barcode which the cruise attended required. The attendant finally let us aboard the ship. I will not use Viator in the future. It is not dependable.
