Highlights
  • Cathedral of Segovia - Explore the final masterpiece of Gothic architecture with this entry pass. Access is via the north cross-wing. Its interior, bathed in light from Flemish stained-glass windows of the 16th century, presents a spacious, minimalist aesthetic, featuring a prominent Gothic choir from the 15th century, which is older than the cathedral itself, situated at its heart. Opposite the choir at the eastern end stands the main altar, adorned with a 1700s altarpiece crafted by Sabatini.

Encircling the sanctuary and apse are over 20 chapels. The third chapel to the right upon entering (Capilla de San Cosme y San Damian) showcases a wooden sculpture depicting the mourning of Christ by Gregorio Fernández, a Baroque artist of the 1600s.

The Chapel of the Holy Sacrament, a creation of the exuberant Churriguera, is adorned with stained-glass windows, intricately detailed choir seating, and paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries, including a retable illustrating Christ’s entombment by Juan de Juni.

Facing the entrance on the opposite side, the south cross-wing leads to a door that opens into the late-Gothic cloister, predating the cathedral. This cloister, along with its ornate entrance, was relocated from the previous cathedral and is the handiwork of architect Juan Guas.

Directly beneath the cloister’s floor lie the burial sites of Juan and Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón; their resting place within a space designed by Guas is fitting, as the trio were pivotal figures in the final era of Spain’s Gothic architectural period.

Adjacent to the cloister is a modest museum of ecclesiastical art, partially set within the upper-level chapter house, featuring a white-and-gold ceiling from the 17th century, a later instance of Mudéjar artesonado craftsmanship. The museum’s collection includes jewelry, paintings, and an assortment of valuable ancient manuscripts.

Additional Information

The Segovia Cathedral, Spain’s last constructed Gothic cathedral, majestically adorns the historical Plaza Mayor in Segovia. It marks the location where Isabella I was crowned as the Queen of Castile. Often referred to as ‘la dama de las catedrales’, this cathedral fuses a distinctively Gothic exterior with a strikingly unadorned interior, and houses a rich collection of treasures.

Lovely. - The Lady of the Cathedrals is beautiful. Lots of art inside. We really liked it. Must see if you are going to Segovia. I didn't climb the tower but it must be very cool to see Segovia from there. With the entrance tb you access the episcopal palace.

Find a hotel in La Granja with a trip to Segovia - The spectacular Cathedral... majestic!! We will return when they finish restoring the chapel and missing stained glass windows... but there are 27 chapels... there is a lot to see. The chorus is awesome!!

Fantastic! - Such an amazing place! The architecture is incredible. Highly recommend going to the bell tower, but it’s not for the faint of heart. It’s 190 steps and they’re very narrow. The tour guide is excellent and encourages everyone to take their time.

A stunning Gothic Cathedral - We enjoyed our visit to the city of Segovia. The Cathedral was one of three sites we came to see and it did not disappoint. We were amazed to see the 22 chapels and the stunning main altar. We also visited the Bishops Palace which is worth the visit if you have time.

Last Gothic cathedral in Spain - This cathedral, built on the highest part of the elevation where the city of Segovia is located, is a magnificent example of a late Gothic cathedral, which although it was not completed until almost two and a half centuries later, so it ended with Renaissance parts and baroque It is important to book the visit online in advance, especially if you later want to climb the bell tower. You have to be careful with the schedules, because sometimes if you want it guided it is complicated. It is worth it, and the guided tour was interesting. Interesting to visit the paved patio, the cloister, the museum rooms and the climb to the tower.

Schedule change without notice - Regrettable. We saw at the door of the cathedral that the hours were until 9:30 p.m. and when we showed up at 6:30 p.m. they told us no, that today they close at 6:30 p.m. I tell them that the sign says until 9:30 p.m. and they tell me yes, but that today they close at 6:30 p.m., without further explanation. We see that tourists continue to arrive and they make everyone turn around. We have been left without seeing the cathedral after all day walking through Segovia. He could have given us time if we had known. It seems that it was very difficult to put up a sign warning of today's exceptional closure. This is apparently how they want to treat tourists here.
