The third Ecumenical Council, which proclaimed the Virgin “Mother of God”, took place in this basilica in 431. Pope Leo XIII (1878-1903) ruled favorably on these discoveries and reestablished them, mentioning Ephesus as the probable place of the Virgin’s dormition.
