Highlights
  • Park and National Palace of Pena - The fantastic Pena Palace is one of the greatest examples of the romantic revival of the century. XIX in Portugal.

Located in Monte da Pena, the Palace was built on the site of an old convent of friars of the Order of São Jerónimo. It was the result of the imagination of D. Fernando de Saxe Coburgo-Gotha, who married Queen D. Maria II in 1836. In love with Sintra, he decided to acquire the convent and the surrounding lands to build the summer palace of the royal family.

The consort king adopted Portuguese architectural and decorative forms for the palace, in the revivalist style (neo-gothic, neo-manueline, neo-islamic, neo-renaissance) and in the surroundings he decided to make a magnificent English-style park, with the most varied tree species exotic.

Inside, still decorated to the taste of the kings who lived there, the chapel stands out, where you can see a magnificent alabaster marble altarpiece attributed to Nicolau Chanterenne (one of the architects of the Jerónimos Monastery, in Lisbon). Also worthy of mention are the mural paintings in trompe l’oeil and the tile coverings.

Additional Information

Sintra has been historically treasured by kings and dignitaries, praised by authors and poets, a notable instance being Lord Byron who christened it a glorious Eden. Sintra showcases a vast range of chalets and estates, with some offering lodging via Rural Tourism or Housing.

Worth highlighting are the palaces like Pena, erected during the romantic era on one of Serra’s peaks, the Seteais, from the 18th century, now refashioned into a chic Hotel, and Monserrate, renowned for its exquisite gardens hosting rare exotic species in the nation.

The delicacies of Sintra, particularly the pillows and the renowned cheeses, earn a special mention. As per olden documents, their production dates back to the 12th century.

In the vicinity, the beaches and Cabo da Roca, the westernmost tip of the European continent, as well as Colares, the namesake of a classified wine region, are particularly noteworthy.

The tour quality is two MICHELIN stars but reasonable money! - My family trip to Lisbon without participating in the tour organized by ABC and Luis Rodrogues would not make sense at all. Punctuality, an interesting program of the trip, attractive comments, a lot of history of local places and Portugal itself. Great tips on how to use the attractions and local cuisine! I sincerely recommend. We are delighted. Worth a detour!

Surprisingly wonderful - I must say the viator booking did not reflect the wonderful day we had. I thought this would be 8 hours at Sintra and wandered what can one do for 8 hours in Sintra. It was wonderful. On top of it Capo de Boca and Cascaix. With a private car and driver/guide! Kevin was courteous and very informative. We really liked him.

Felt scammed by this tour - We've done Viator tours in several countries in Europe & Asia and have always had wonderful experiences with them until now. This tour to Sintra and other places near there made me feel scammed and if this had been my introduction to Viator I would certainly never use them again. This was one of the most expensive tours we've booked through Viator (almost $300 for two of us) and the description said that one of the highlights included the Pena Palace in Sintra. When I read 'included' that, to me, and based on my experience with other Viator tours, indicates that part of the $300 we're paying should get us INTO the palace. . .but we had to pay an additional 38 Euro to actually get in once there (a tour we did completely on our own without a guide at all). Note that nowhere in the tour description did it say that the tour did NOT include entrance to the main attraction of the trip! Our guide spoke very little English, and though he was pleasant and drove well, he gave us very little information the entire day - he literally dropped us off places, pointed where we needed to go and then said to text him when we were ready for him to pick us up. This is NOT a tour. This is a driver. And we have never experienced this before with Viator. For lunch he dropped us at a restaurant, where there were no nearby options. . .that lunch ended up costing us another 140 Euro for two of us. . .ridiculous! We wondered what kind of kick-back our driver may have been getting for taking us there. We did another full-day Viator tour with another operator here in Lisbon today - that tour was just over $100 for two of us, and we had a guide who was so full of information that it has restored my expectations of a Viator tour. But our trip yesterday to Sintra, Cascais etc. was absolutely disappointing.
