Highlights
  • Centro Historico de Sintra - The enchanted village of Sintra is a quaint town boasting an impressive array of historical sites and captivating tourist spots. Over 10 national monuments can be found here, including lavish palaces, ancient ruins, and ornate manor houses scattered across the region’s hills, offering challenging hiking trails.

Exploring its historic core, particularly Piriquita, a highlight of Sintra, you’ll encounter traditional confections that are sure to delight, especially during the cooler days that are characteristic of Sintra’s unique microclimate.

  • Park and National Palace of Pena - As previously mentioned, Sintra is abundant in palaces. The decision of which palace or palaces to visit is entirely up to you. Your guide will provide information about each, and together you can choose the most fitting one(s) for your interests, ranging from the Romantic Pena Palace, to the Moorish Castle, the Masonic Regaleira, or even the Portuguese Versailles. The choice is yours alone (admission fees not included).
  • Cabo da Roca - Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of Europe, famously described by Luís de Camões in ‘Os Lusíadas’ (Canto VIII) as the place ‘where the land ends and the sea begins.’ The lighthouse, standing 165 meters tall and dating back to 1772, allows us to grasp the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean and appreciate one of Portugal’s most iconic landmarks.
  • Boca do Inferno - The name ‘Mouth of Hell’ given to this location stems from its morphological resemblance and the intense, awe-inspiring impact of the waves. The cliff’s rock is primarily composed of carbonate, which is eroded by rainwater containing carbon dioxide, leading to the dissolution of the carbonate.

This process results in the formation of cavities and caves within the limestone. When the upper layers collapse, the cave is destroyed, leaving behind a gaping cavity. This unique site serves as a recreational area where visitors can enjoy a sublime view and spectacular sunsets, although it is marred by the occasional tragic suicides that occur along its perilous and unprotected cliffs.

  • Cascais Marina - It’s time to discover Cascais, with its expansive beach and charming streets that make the town a popular tourist destination. It’s a blend of a traditional fishing village and a luxurious resort, offering numerous restaurants that serve fresh seafood.

Situated between the bay and the Sintra mountains, Cascais became a favored holiday spot for the royal family in the 19th century, which in turn attracted the nobility. In Largo de Camoes, located in the town’s historic center, you’ll find a plethora of shops and eateries.

  • Casino Estoril - On the return trip to Lisbon, we’ll drive along the coast with a view of Estoril, renowned for its Casino, the largest gaming facility in Europe, and for being the place where Ian Fleming penned the first James Bond novel, ‘Casino Royale,’ during World War II. We’ll make our way back to Lisbon via the ‘Marginal’ road, taking in the stunning ocean vistas.

Additional Information

Sintra is a beloved retreat for the aristocracy in Portugal, known for its palatial estates and vibrant plant life. This invites you to join our excursion to Sintra, Cascais, and Estoril.

Discover the rich history of Portugal documented in Sintra’s grand and distinctive palaces and gardens.

For over five hundred years, the Portuguese Royals frequented their opulent mansions and extravagant estates as summer residences to savor the pristine atmospheric conditions and brisk mountain microclimate, providing relief from Lisbon’s summer heat. This has been notated by the British poet, Lord Byron, in his literature “Glorioso Éden”. To this day, Sintra remains a muse to acclaimed writers and filmmakers, who derive inspiration from its allure and wealth of tales and legends.

Our itinerary includes a stopover at the worldly village of Cascais and its charming dock filled with quaint fishing boats. You will be given leisure time to appreciate this formerly modest fishing hamlet, now a favored resort region for Lisbon residents.

Whirlwind tour of Lisbon! - We had a whirlwind all day tour of Lisbon. We were able to see all the primary sights and then some. Vitor was courteous and gave us relevant information but did not overwhelm us with details. He kept us moving (we are active people) which included walking through some neighborhoods, cathedrals and historic castles. He also gave us good intel on follow up activities.

Visit to Sintra, Cascais, Estoril, and Cabo da Roca - The tour was excellent. We visited the Palace of Pena and Quinta de Regaleira. We also stopped by Cascais, Estoril, and Cabo da Rica. The views were spectacular. Ruben, our driver and guide was very friendly, knowledgeable, and very complacent. He explained everything in detail and answered all our questions. We highly recommend this tour. Walkborder is a very professional and reliable company. Thank you .

Fantastic customer service by Pedro and Hugo. This is the only tour operator we have used twice in one week. - We stayed in Lisbon and then Sintra. We had arranged in advance through Hugo Walkborder Tours CEO for Pedro to drive us between the two places with our luggage so we did not miss a day of seeing Portugal through transit. Pedro was fantastic. He had to get up at 630am to come and get us on time from central Lisbon at 9am. He arrived in a very nice Mercedes car - thank you Hugo! On our trip he took us over the 25th de Abril bridge and to the Sanctuary of Christ the King, at opening time and got out of the car walked with us pointing out items of interest and taking photos of us. What we really appreciated was that he pointed out a small dot on the hills in the distance that was Pena Palace in Sintra. He then took us to Quelez Castle dropped us at the door, we paid and went in and then after parking the car Pedro also came into the castle and acted as a personal tour guide. He then took us to the Moorish Castle and let us go around that on our own. While we were in the Moorish Castle he telephoned our airbnb owner and confirmed our arrival time and destination - which was not very easy to locate. He then drove us to the airbnb and carried our bags down the stairs to our front door. We also had booked this full day private tour which for us was Cascais, Estoril and Cabo da Roca. Again Pedro (who lives in Sintra) turned up in Hugo's Mercedes on time and took us via a scenic route through the hills to Cabo Da Roca. He then drove us along the coast part-way to Cascais and let us walk some of the rest of the way. He would drive past us occasionally to make sure we were ok. He then drove us into Cascais, let us wander around there for a while, then picked us up and drove us to a restaurant that was already full and got us a table overlooking the ocean. He then drove us around the area some more before returning us to our airbnb. At all times during our tours Pedro made sure we had sufficient bottles of drinking water for which we were very appreciative. Pedro also found out that for another tour we had booked we were supposed to go to the train station in Sintra to be picked up but our airbnb was in historic Sintra. He persuaded that tour operator to pick us up from our airbnb. When we went to Pena by ourselves we were able to see the 25th de Abril bridge and the Sanctuary of Christ the King memorial from there which was great. Finally although he was unable to drive us to the airport for our flight home as he had previous commitments he arranged for a friend of his Nelson to pick us up and take us to the airport - Nelson drove us in his Mercedes to the airport, parker in short-term parking and carried our bags to the check-in desk. More fantastic service. Throughout our time in Portugal the locals were so friendly and helpful, they are proud of their country and in people like Hugo, Nelson and Pedro they have got plenty to be proud about. Were it not for Pedro we would not have seen anywhere near as much of Portugal as we did. In summary we had the best service imaginable from Walkborder Tours. Thank you so much John and Chris

A Great Way to See Portugal. - We used Walkborder tours for a 10 day trip through the country. Together with Hugo we outlined a trip that took us from the north ( Porto) down to The Algarve region, and much in between. Hugo was very patient as we had a lot of email exchange back and forth during the planning of the trip. I provided a rough outline of what we wanted to do in the amount of time we had available, and Hugo made it work. Our guide was Pedro C. who clearly has a great love for his country and that was demonstrated many times over the course of the tour. He also navigated the streets/hills of Lisbon like a pro! He was receptive when we needed to slow the pace down, and have a more relaxing day once we arrived in Albufiera (Algarve). Overall, it was a wonderful trip and well organized.
