Highlights
  • Castelo dos Mouros - Moorish Castle – Sintra Monuments Skirting two Sintra mountain ranges, the Moorish Castle dates back to the early days of the Moorish occupation of the Peninsula - the eighth century. After many attempts, was finally taken by Dom Afonso Henriques first king of Portugal in 1147, and was built the first Christian Chapel of the city, dedicated to St. Peter of Penaferrim. In the romantic period, in 1860, the walls were restored under the supervision of Dom Fernando II, husband of Dona Maria II, who wooded the surrounding areas, and gave a new dignity to the ancient medieval ruins. Noteworthy is the Moorish Cistern inside and the so-called Royal Tower. Located about 3.5 km from the historic center of Sintra.

Delightful Sintra tour with Jorge. - Jorge our driver/guide was a wealth of information. He suggested paths to take at each stop, allowing us plenty of time to explore at every location. He adjusted the schedule to make the best use of our time. After our last stop he suprised us with local pastries from Sintra, just what we needed for the ride back to Lisbon after an active tour.

Stunning Sintra - We had an awesome day seeing the breathtaking sights of Sintra. Filipe was an exceptional guide with vast knowledge and excellent communication. The traffic can be hectic and he always kept us updated if he was delayed. You won’t regret booking this tour (ask for Filipe)

Afternoon in Sintra - Had a great relaxing afternoon visiting Sintra with my husband and Miguel our driver. Miguel was very patient and considerate of our pace when stopping for pictures or wanting to stay in a particular spot longer. We the stopped at a Cafe for coffee & Portuguese treats. I would highly recommend Miguel. His wealth of knowledge regarding Portugal history was impressive.

Beautiful trip to a beautiful place! - We had a really great day with Margarita! She was prompt, full of information, and so kind to our daughter on her birthday! She helped us find local places and hidden gems.Thank you for the amazing lunch recommendation and fun day! Note about Pena palace...buy your tickets in advance and include the transfer to the top, it's a steep climb! The tour inside is interesting but you move in a straight line, and it's slow...there aren't many chances to go at your own pace. I'm glad we went inside, but it won't be for everyone. The most breathtaking parts are the outside of the palace and the views from the terraces.

Beautiful place in the clouds! - Our guide Miguel was the right mix between personable and professional - 5 stars for him! He was very knowledgeable and given it was rainy, he did his best to drop us as close as possible and even bought us an umbrella!! Some more information ahead of the trip would have been useful - e.g. that Sintra has its own microclimate and jackets/umbrelllas are advised.

Misleading…not guided at all - We booked the Private Half Day Tour to Sintra and Pena Palace from Lisbon for 28 June with Fantastic Ride. Two items out of our driver’s control that don’t affect this review: (1) overcast foggy weather and (2) bus reversed into and damaged driver’s van at Sintra village. Unfortunately, this tour is misleading in its title and description. We had Nelson G, who while pleasant, was basically a driver and not a tour guide at all. Accordingly, this wasn’t a guided tour as implied by the title/ description. He was not engaged — didn’t share any history or local culture or even talk with us much. He seemed reluctant to commit to what else we’d see besides the Pena Palace / Park (and even with that seemed surprised that we had purchased tickets to enter). Following the accident at Sintra village, he did arrange for his colleague to take us up to Pena Palace entry gate. This colleague was very good, and in the 10-15 min drive up, engaged with us to share some history and provide local color. This was what we’d been expecting for the ‘guided tour’ we booked, but was not what we received. My family and I continued on to tour Pena Palace and re-connected with Nelson afterwards (he was dealing with the local police due to accident). After I asked for the 2nd time what else we’d be seeing (referencing the tour description), he did drive by to point out some other historical sites but no background (although no/low visibility due to weather) and some natural sites (where he pointed out cork trees and olive groves). He drove us by Cascais, where we asked to stop at the beach so our 2 kids could play. We were able to stay at least 30-45 min, so that was much appreciated by us. If you’re looking for a true guided tour, then I wouldn’t recommend this tour / tour company.
