The remnants of the Ancient Roman city are particularly impressing, previously referred to as the “Splendidissima Colonia Julia” (“Most Beautiful Julia Colony”) by Emperor Augustus. These include grand walls, regal city gates, and most notably, the Villa of Mosaics, considered one of the most significant archaeological finds in the past two decades.

You will explore a magnificent Roman villa, named for the brilliant multicolored mosaics that illustrate the beautiful Umbrian countryside, featuring imagery of wild birds and grape harvesting, as well as exotic and mythical creatures, like panthers and sea monsters.

Upon entering the city via the Roman Porta Consolare (Consular Gate), you will be captivated by the intriguing medieval lanes of Spello and its impressive churches. Inside the Church of Sant’Andrea Apostolo, you will be awed by a sixteenth-century masterpiece crafted by Pinturicchio, one of the preeminent artists of his era, commonly referred to as “the Little Painter”.

This renowned artist from Umbria also decorated the Baglioni Chapel in the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maggiore with frescoes, where you can also find a stunning Deruta ceramic floor and Pinturicchio’s famous self-portrait, revealing all the intricacies within his masterpieces.

Spello - The Roman Mosaics are a must to see; however, this can easily be done on your own. If it’s your only day in Spello the tour will be extremely helpful. If you are staying there, explore on your on.
