Dominated by the ancient Minneriya Wewa, the park has plenty of scrub, forest and wetlands in its 88.9 sq km to also provide shelter for toque macaques, sambar deer, buffalo, crocodiles and leopards (the latter are very rarely seen, however).
There are rarer animals for groups to spot in the park, such as the Sri Lankan leopard and Sri Lankan sloth bear, however both are elusive and more difficult to see. Conditions in the park provide a well-suited habitat for up to 160 bird species, including water birds such as pelicans, storks and herons.

Sri Lanka’s Minneriya National Park boasts the largest gathering of wild Asian elephants globally and is a haven for diverse wildlife. Spanning nearly 31,000 hectares, the park is home to around 170 bird species and various other animals. Visitors often opt for jeep safaris to explore the park, enhancing their chances of spotting wildlife at dusk.

Unique experience - Sudath is the perfect guy for a elephant safari. We saw a lot of elephants and he got us the best view compared to other Jeeps while also respecting the wildlife. He is a kind person who goes the extra mile to give us a unique experience. We highly recommend this guide for your trip.

A great adventure with Sudath! - Sudath picked us up in Sigirya and drove us to the Hurulu Eco Park. For about 4 hours he drove his amazing Mahindra through the park, bringing us close to two big groups of elephants and several solitary ones and telling us everything we wanted to know about these gentle giants. In the end, he drove us to the bus station in Habarana and helped us get on the bus to Kandy. He was a great guide on the trip and we’re really grateful for everything.

Great safari - It was such a great experience! Sudath is super friendly, experienced guide who told a lot of information about the elephants. He also made sure we don't leave the national park without amazing photos and great memories! We got lucky and saw plenty groups of elephants, from the baby elephants to three tuskers at the same place! There were also wild mangooses, peacocks and other beautiful birds. We totally recommend having a tour with Sudath 🙂
