Minneriya National Park is located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka. It was officially designated as a national park on August 12, 1997, after initially being declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1938. The primary purpose of its protection is to safeguard the catchment area of the Minneriya tank and the surrounding wildlife. This tank holds historical significance, having been constructed by King Mahasen in the third century AD. The park serves as a feeding ground during the dry season for elephants residing in the forests of the Matale, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee districts.
