Highlights
  • The Royal Swedish Opera - Begin your scenic journey with a brief introduction to Sweden and its capital, Stockholm. Officially known as the “Kingdom of Sweden,” many of the buildings you’ll encounter have royal ties. The grand Royal Palace before you was constructed in the early 18th century in the splendid Baroque style. The Opera house is featured in Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “The Masked Ball,” which is about the Swedish king Gustav III. The elegant building in the classic style across the square, now home to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was once the Heir Presumptive palace.
  • Parliament Building (Riksdagshuset) - Next, delve into the history of the Swedish government. The Parliament Building, designed in the Neo-Renaissance style with a Neo-Baroque facade, was built between 1897 and 1905.

The predecessor of the parliament (riksdagen) was the “Riksdag of the Estates” (Ståndsriksdagen), where Nobility, Clergy, Burghers, and Peasants met separately for discussions before convening with the King in the palace. Until its dissolution in 1866, this institution was the highest authority in Sweden next to the King. In 1866, a two-chamber parliament was introduced, but without equal voting rights for all citizens. The first elections with general suffrage were held in 1921, following a long political struggle led by liberals and socialists. In 1975, the constitution was amended, merging the two chambers into one and confirming that the king has only a ceremonial role with no real power.

  • Riksbron - From the Riksbron bridge, you can admire Knights Island, the Prime Minister’s residence, the Government building, and the House of Nobility. You can also see the City Hall, where the annual Nobel prize banquet is held.

  • Lejonbacken - “Lejonbacken” is located on the north side of the Royal Palace and is one of Stockholm’s most popular photo spots.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, Sweden was a major power in Northern Europe. Here, you will see the Royal Garden with a statue of Karl XII, the last of the Swedish warrior kings. To the right of the park is the Financial District, built at the turn of the 20th century, a period of flourishing architectural styles.

You will also see the Grand Hotel, Stockholm’s most prestigious hotel, where Nobel laureates stay during the Nobel prize ceremonies.

  • Slottsbacken - You will pass through the inner courtyard of the Royal Palace and make a brief visit to the Palace Chapel, where the Royal family baptizes their children.

Outside the Royal Palace stands a statue of Carl XIV Johan, who had a distinguished career in Napoleon’s army before being adopted into the Swedish royal family. He was the first of the Bernadotte dynasty, the world’s longest-reigning royal dynasty, still in power today!

Carl XIV Johan was brought to Sweden from France to reclaim territories lost to the Russians during the Napoleonic wars. Instead, he focused on diplomacy, infrastructure development, and education. In 2014, Sweden celebrated 200 years of peace. The industrial revolution, natural resources, and significant Swedish inventions laid the foundation for a welfare state.

  • Stortorget - Stortorget is the central square in Old Town and the most photographed spot in Stockholm. The square is surrounded by beautiful houses in 17th-century Scandinavian Renaissance and 18th-century Classicism styles.

In November 1530, “The Bloodbath of Stockholm” occurred at Stortorget, where around 100 noblemen and priests were executed by the Danish king Christian II, who is known in Sweden as Christian the Tyrant.

The Nobel Prize Museum is located at Stortorget. The Swedish Royal Academies and other committees select the winners of the most prestigious prizes in various fields of science and art.

  • Stockholm Old Town - From Stortorget, walk along Köpmangatan, or Merchants Street, which has been mentioned in documents since 1350. You’ll be guided through narrow alleyways to experience the medieval atmosphere! Continue along Österlånggatan and down to Skeppsbron, where ships have been loading cargo since the 17th century.

  • Strömkajen - At Strömkajen, the Royal Canal Tour, operated by Stromma Group, begins. Audioguides are available in English and several other languages, including Spanish, Chinese, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Italian, and Russian.

The boat will take you on an enchanting tour through the “Djurgårdsbrunn” Canal, offering stunning views of the Stockholm skyline.

Swedish fika (coffee and cinnamon roll), tea, soft drinks, and pastries are available at the onboard bar. Beer, wine, sandwiches, and snacks are also offered.

Stockholm city tour- Excellent! - Recommend a fantastic city tour of Stockholm, given by August (his name) at Amitylux Guided Tours, amitylux.com. He proved to be the best guide we’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing-his breath and depth of knowledge was laudatory and perhaps, most important, gave the group a balanced and compassionate understanding of Sweden’s history and culture. He garnered a diverse group of inquiries and honestly answered all the questions. He was personable and had a fun sense of humor. I only wish he could be cloned for other countries we’ve visited. Stockholm is a wonderful city- on all accounts!

Great overview - Excellent historical introduction. Our guide Nalalie was great, very informative and approachable. Only 10 people booked and only 8 showed up so it was a nice sized private group. The boat portion was good in terms of what you see, a circle around Djurgarden, which again gives a good overview of the city with a taped commentary on earphones at your seat( comes in multiple languages too). Highly recommended.

Great way to start your stay in Stockholm, see some of the city, learn some history, & get ideas about where to go next. - The walking tour takes about 2 hours and is not at all physically challenging - some small hills, crossing streets, cobblestone roads, etc. - typical "old town" touring. Our tour guide was fantastic, he had laminated photos he shared with us to help illustrate all that we were discussing and observing, he was very helpful and knowledgable, and he did an excellent job of setting a good pace for everyone and keeping us on schedule while still allowing flexibility for many photographs and a couple "quick dash over here" side trips to peek around corners. We all agreed we would absolutely take another tour with him as a guide. The boat portion of the tour was a pre-recorded audio guide that we joined once we departed with our walking tour guide (who led us there and ensured we all got on safely, etc.). The canal boat tour portion is not "private" per se as other groups and individuals do join that boat and it makes two stops along the entire route to allow others to join or depart as needed. We enjoyed the content and presentation of the walking tour much more than the pre-recorded canal boat tour; however, it was absolutely lovely to see everything from the water and we certainly would not have been afforded those views any other way. We would take this tour again (no regrets at all) and it's worth pointing out that the boat tour offers a nice little bar/cafe and bathroom on board.

Great way to experience Stockholm - We had a really good time on this tour. The combination of walking trough the old town first and then taking a trip on the boat was great. I really liked our guide, he was very knowledgeable and entertaining. I definitely recommend this tour. It took about half a day and at the end our guide gave us a list of other fun things to do in Stockholm.

Good tour but pricey for what you get - Natalie was very knowledgeable about the city and took us to some interesting places. The boat trip was also very enjoyable but would have been better if you were able to go outside and take photos/better see the view. Overall this combined tour feels a little overpriced for what you get.
