Highlights
  • Olle Adolphsons park - The tour begins in this quaint park offering a stunning view of Stockholm and the water below. Upon arrival, open the StoryTourist app to start the Stockholm Witch Trials tour.

Your digital guide, 12-year-old Gertrud, will greet you. She lived next to Malin Matsdotter in the 1670s and fears history may repeat itself.

  • St. Mary Magdalene Church - Gertrud will show you the church from across the street and explain the historical significance of religion and the church’s impact on women accused of witchcraft.
  • Stockholm City Museum - You’ll pause outside the museum, which served as the southern city hall and courthouse in the 1600s. This is where those accused of witchcraft, including Malin Matsdotter, were tried.
  • Mosebacke Torg - Explore this medieval square, once home to a windmill. Many women from Gertrud’s story lived here. Anna Månsdotter was among the accused, and Lisbet Carlsdotter was one of the young maids who fabricated tales of women kidnapping children to meet the Devil.
  • Katarina Kyrka - Visit this beautiful 17th-century church, central to the witch trials. Many congregants were involved, either as accusers or accused witches.
  • Katarina Östra Kyrkogårdsgränd - See where locals set up a “watch house” during the witch trials’ mass hysteria. Parents gathered here with their children to protect them from supposed witch kidnappings.
  • Åsögatan - Gertrud will take you to where the “Boy from Gävle” lived in the 1670s. He allegedly started the rumors and mass hysteria about witches in Södermalm.
  • Anna Lindhagens tappa - This small park sits atop what was once known as Gallow’s Mountain, where public executions were held in the 1500s and 1600s.
