Situated on the southern slopes of the Likhi Range at an altitude of approximately 740 meters, Surami is a favored mountain climatic resort with a rich historical background. The Surami Fortress, a medieval complex featuring a church, tower, and palace, provides a window into Georgia’s past. The town’s location at the intersection of two significant historical roads underscores its strategic importance.
- Zhinvali Dam - Zhinvali is a quaint town on the Aragvi River. Though not a bustling city, it holds historical importance. Once a hub for Georgian nobility, the area is dotted with remnants of its former splendor, including fortresses, towers, and palaces. It also served as a crossroads for key trade routes. Zhinvali is renowned for its large hydroelectric power station, one of Georgia’s largest. The dam created the Zhinvali Reservoir, a picturesque artificial lake.
- Ananuri Fortified Castle Ensemble - The Ananuri castle, a medieval fortress, stands 900 meters above sea level and is adorned with ancient churches and imposing fighting towers. The castle offers a stunning view of the Zhinvali water reservoir, a sight to behold.
- Gudauri - The Georgian-Russian Friendship Monument, built in 1983, is located on the Georgian Military Highway between the Gudauri ski resort and the Jvari Pass. This memorial features a large circular stone arch and concrete structure overlooking the Devil’s Valley in the Caucasus Mountains.
